2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission SLOW fuel fill up

I'm having problems filling my 98 3500 most times it fills ok IF I put the pump on the SLOWEST setting, but if I try to fill it faster ( or some times even if I don't ) it will back up into the filler tube and not take any more fuel at all. Like yesterday it was almost empty and I coulld not get it to take more than 1 gallon of fuel. There does not seem to be any obstructions in the filler tube. ???

I have experienced the same thing. One day a couple months ago I set the pump handle trigger & went inside the store.



Returned, put hose away and the ticket spit out. Started to record the info and only 0. 385 gallons????



Went the thru the credit card routine again and paid attention to what was coming out of the nozzle. A lot of air mixed in with the diesel making it very foamy.



I don't know where it is a flapper like in some cars, or a ball as you mentioned, but that has got to go away...

I had the same problem with my '97

I had the same problem with my '97, and after a few 10 minute fill-ups, I couldn't take it any more. I never had this problem with my '98 or my '01, so I figured something was wrong. I pulled the filler neck/tube out and found the ball right at the tank end of the filler neck/tube. I removed it, and now it works great. I'm not sure what was different between trucks, or if that ball is even supposed to be in a diesel equipped truck, but mine is history. I bought this truck used, I don't know how the original owner could stand it- anything more than the first notch on the fuel pump handle, and it would shut off.

This may not relate to your problem, but it has helped me before. Sometimes the hose from the pump can get air in it and vapor lock causing it to fill real slow. If this happens lower the filler handle to the ground allowing the air to go to the top of the hose. Then start pumping again.

That little ball is part of the "roll over" valve, designed to prevent fuel from spilling if one day you find your truck with the greasy side up. I removed mine when I added my Aux. tank. It is a little ball about the size of a ping pong ball. Mine was green! Removing it makes a lot of difference.

I've always heard it called an anti-siphon ball... I would imagine that the fuel cap would prevent diesel from pouring out in a rollover.

It's been 2 years since I did it. As I recall it might have performed both functions.

Whatever it's intended purpose, fuel goes in a whole lot easier with it removed!

A tip posted on another site.

When trying to "Fill to the top of the neck", after the handle clicks off the first time:

Look at the underside of the nozzle (about where it would rest on the filler neck if refilling.

There is a small hole. (about the size of a pencil lead)

Cover this hole with your finger, gently squeeze the handle to get a minimum flow.

You'll find the stream of fluid now has NO AIR BUBBLES.

You can try to increase the flow until it clicks off.

(there will be a little fine-tuning to get maximum flow without clicking off depending on the individual pump. )



I have found that I can fill it to the top of the neck with virtually NO FOAM UP using this method.

Saves about 5 minutes on a fill-up.

Forest, I had to go out to my truck and so I took the opportunity to look at my Service Manual. There is what's called a "rollover valve" in top of the fuel tank, but that is not the little ball in the filler neck I was talking about.



My manual doesn't have any mention of an anti-siphoning ball, but you may very well be right. Maybe someone will chime in who has just removed his and set the record straight for us.
