I was changing the oil on my 2003 with 130k on the odometer. I decided to install the new FF19800E filter to help filter out all the junk that the ULSD fuel is stripping from storage tanks, fuel tanks and fuel lines.
After draining the fuel from the filter canister and removing the old filter, i took a peak into the bottom of the canister. To my suprise, there was a fair amount of "sludge" that did not drain out with the fuel. I soaked up the remainder of the diesel fuel and used the shop vac to suck out the sludge. The sludge was dark red in color and felt gritty between the fingers. I can only assume that this is the larger stuff that's being stripped off the walls of the fuel tank by the new ultra low sulfur diesel. I installed the new filter and bumped the starter to run the electric lift pump with the water drain open. I hope that this flushed out the remainder of the sludge.
Has anybody seen this kind of deposits in the fuel filter?
My injection pump is starting to leak fuel now due to the ULSD as well. I noticed the oil pan bolts under the injection pump were wet with diesel. No spots on the driveway, yet. My understanding is that the pumps on the new trucks won't leak, as it is the change in fuel that causes the seals to leak, not the ULSD itself. Engines exposed only to ULSD should not have a problem .
