Has anyone pulled a trailer over slumgullion pass into Lake City, CO? I drove to the top without the trailer. I plan to go back with my trailer this summer. It seem as though it could be a brake burner with a trailer on the way down.

Just hold your speed down and watch for signs of hot brakes. You should be fine. Rule of thumb is go down the hill the same speed you went up or slower. There are turn-out points on the way down. Pull over and check your brakes. Have all your brakes adjusted and checked before taking on the hills.

Drove truck(semis)over every mountain pass in Colo. Just take it easy and don't let people rush you. Pull over and let em by..... And enjoy the scenery... . Don't forget the fishin poles!

That's a beautiful drive! I haven't pulled my trailer over it either. I think it would be similar to Monarch. By the time you gear down to a safe speed for the curves - you won't need the brakes much. I go down to 3rd in my 5sp for roads like that and it holds back quite well. Craig

This is not really all that bad of a pass! The worst part of the decent into Lake City is a very sharp turn to the right, just about two miles south of Lake City.
I came down it last year with the fifth wheel and had no problems, but I did smell alot of burnt brakes along the way.
I turn the exhaust brake on, put it in 3rd. and let it coast!( if you don't have a exhaust brake-you will need one in Colorado)

I learned that last year coming down Monarch pass last summer. I have an e-brake in the box and will be installing it. Thanks for all the input. What activities can one do around Lake City? Hiking, 4-wheelin, ???.

I did the Slugullion Pass last year with no exhaust brake. I stayed in 4th or 5th and used the brakes hard in short bursts.
At Lake City you can rent a Jeep for $100 a day and do the 60 mile alpine loop. Well worth the money. If you've never been to the top of a 13000 ft mountain in 4WD low, its a ball. Plus beautiful scenery.

Blue Goat:
Do you have 4x4? If so there is a lot of good 4 wheeling in this area. There is a lot of good fishing, and you can hike till your legs fall off!
When are you going, and where are you planning on staying? My wife and I spent three weeks there last year, we were going to go back this year but decided to make Yellowstone again this year.

Stick

I am planning on going the last week of July and staying for two weeks. My truck is 2WD but I usually pack my 4 wheeler in the back of the truck. I was considering staying in the campground in town. Do you have a recommendation for a place to stay?

I usually go to the Matterhorn campground between Rico and Telluride, but I am looking for a different place to go.

Is this the same downhill grade near Raton?? I'm heading to fun valley (south fork CO) from Texas, taking 54 to ih25 to us160w (I think those are the roads... texline, to raton, then north to 160). My father in law says there is a serious downhill run somewhere after raton (installing pacbrake saturday in preparation!).

We stayed at the Highlander Camp. It is south of town by the lake. The newest in this area, and very clean and friendly.
I heard last year they were going to close at least two of the campgrounds around Lake City, because of sewer problems. So you might want to make reservations early!
If you do take 4 wheelers you can ride them from the lake over Cinnamon Pass all the way to Silverton if you want.

No this is not the same downhill, not even close!
Your route to South Fork is very easy, but you will never regret the exhaust brake wherever you go.

I also will be in the San Quans this year, mid Sept. , Then on to Moab Ut. for some real 4wheeling. I love Ouray Co. Been going there for 15 yrs. I always say I'll try something new next year, but I just can't stay away. Take Engineer pass to Ouray and see if C. W. Macall is still driving around in his old flatfender jeep.
