I am now pretty much sold on getting a Smarty for my 2006 3500. I also would like a scanner that will work on my other vehicle - 2005 BMW X5. Has anyone used the Smarty as a scan tool for vehicles other than Chrysler?

Has not worked for me either when tried on other vehicles unfortunately; however it's still worth having in spite of this slight drawback... :D

Thanks for all the help. It appears that even though there is OBDII, all vehicles are somewhat different. I have investigated some scan tools and have not found any yet that will work with both the Dodge Cummins and the BMW. AutoEnginuity makes PC software that they say will work with both, but the basic software will only see basic codes and additional software is required to work correctly with either the Dodge Cummins or the BMW. That makes it more expensive than the Smarty and a scan tool for the BMW. Unfortunately, I am getting way over my budget.

I found some great open source software to use with my laptop (and a pricey OBD adapter). Seems that the brand/model specific forums are the best place I've found. I have found free open source stuff for ECM loads, OBD checks and live datalogging.

When I get home I'll look at the program names for reference. The OBD adapter oughta be universal... right? The Smarty works well on the Dodge, but eventually I'd like to find a program for the laptop for datalogging and code reading.

My other vehicle is a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, if the smarty would read the codes for that. I may just have a good excuse for buying one!

I have never tried mine on a BMW but my scan tool claims that it will work on all 1996 and newer vehicles that have an OBD II port. I went on line and reviewed what was out available and cost of the units. In my opinion the best one for cost price value was the Innova 3130 model. I paid a little over $100 for the unit back in Jan 08. This handles everything that I needed.

This has worked on my Dodge and my wife's Ford and my son-in-law's Chevy van. I use this to clear any codes or reset the over head instead of my smarty on the Dodge.
