I was getting around to updating my Smarty to the latest firmware/data - I previously had 1. 20. It's an "S03" Smarty for my 2001.
1. Use Smarty to return truck to "Stock" program
2. Download / install "Smarty USB downloader ver. 5. 08A"
3. Download / extract S03_V126B_DR12A. 7z (8 Jan 2009)
4. Run updater, sending . SMT file from #3
5. Attach Smarty to truck, turn ignition to "ON"
6. Select first option in prep for ECM re-programming ("connect to truck", or similar)
At step 6, after several seconds, I get a comm timeout on the Smarty display.
If I install any of the four "1. 22B" . SMT files on the Smarty (from 20 Sept 2007), I can load any Stock or Catcher software with no problems.
This is repeatable. The newer 1. 26 Smarty firmware always gives the comm timeout, version 1. 22 never does. I've gone back and forth a few times between versions to verify it.
I've searched various forums, and all seem to say that either a) it's a physical connection problem or b) the ECM is "fried". Could either of these be accurate if the problem only appears with the 1. 26 Smarty update?
