Hi guys! first let me say I love my smarty! Unfortunately I read the codes after a 5x5 run with smarty on level 8 and got p1693. Thats the death code for the vp44 isn't it? :{ I cleared the codes and took it for another ride on the same settings. P1693 came back. :( I started the truck in the garage then read the codes again but had none. Will the code only show if a load is placed on the motor? How long can I run it with P1693. Should I order a new vp44 and keep it in the truck with me waiting for the vp44 to fail? How long have some of you kept your truck running with that code? Any advice is appreciated! Mike

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTCDetected in ECMA 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM

No big deal! The one you don't want to see is 216... .

I've had this one for years!

Thanks John! you made my night much better. Truck still running good. The only thing I noticed is after I installed the smarty is after I turn the key on the lift pump either doesn't run at all or for a much shorter time than it did with stock software. (could this be the reason for the P1693?) Have any of you with a smarty noticed this. once the engine is running I have 11 to 12 psi. Under the 5x5 and level eight run it only drops to 6 or 7 psi. so I don't think the lift pump is bad. Any Ideas? Is this normal with the smarty software?

Smarty should set a P0602(ECM fueling calibration error), the P1693 is probably in reference to that code... it's normal.

MDeCook,

I think its normal for the LP to run much shorter duration when key cycled on. Mine does the same thing. If you don't listen real close, you can miss the LP running at all.

Yeap, P0602 & P1693 are what you get with Smarty. Like what was mentioned before, the one you don't want to see is the dreaded P0216.

Thanks again for the replies guys! I am wondering why the lift pump runs for a shorter or not at all with smarty. I watched my fp gauge and sometimes it doesn't even move when I turn the key on. It used to go up to the full 10 psi before. I would think one would want that little burst of fuel at start up to make sure the vp has a good amount of fuel for start up. If you start with no psi at the vp could this lead to a slow but deadly strain on the vp? What do ya think?

The Smarty provides the latest ECM updates in both Stock and CaTCHER programs. This is the reason for the shorter lift pump cycle time. Once you have fuel pressure, there is no need to continue running the pump until start up.

I believe in the post dedicated to SMARTY that Marco built in the shorter LP run time to help eliminate hard starting with after market fueling systems; IE FASS. Do a search for SMARTY and you will find the post dedicated to SMARTY, but be prepared for a two hour read. :D

The newer trucks, like my '02, came with programming that only cycled the LP momentarily at key-on - so it's not a Marco thing - loading the Smarty software into my truck changed nothing in LP operation...
