Hey guys I just got my smarty and programmed the truck right away to #9. I am pretty impressed, but there is not very much smoke, none at top end and very little at low end. Just wondering if this seems right seeing how I've read a ton about there being way to much smoke. On our 12 valves it does'nt take much to smoke the whole road behind you, so maybe that is what I'm comparing it to and for that reason don't think theres very much. So far I'm pretty happy with it though and was wondering if there are any other downloads on the mads site to get more power and smoke? Thanks

I'd be completely satisfied with no smoke if I were you. Smoke is why we now have particulate filters, cats, and EGRs. People are tired of choking behind the smokers, and now they (through the EPA) have put a hurting on us and our great diesel mileage. FWIW.

Yeah, I am happy that the smoke is at a minimum, but it makes me feel that I could be getting more fuel which would mean more power, seeing how there is barely any black smoke (unburnt fuel). Also, the clutch does'nt slip at all, and as far as I know it has never been upgraded. Do you think my programmer is working properly? Also can you put other chips/programmers on with the smarty hooked up? Which would make a good combo? Thanks again fellas!!

On my '03 HO (similar to your truck) the Smarty wouldn't smoke much, even on level 9.

That all changed when I put on a bigger turbo. Black out lanes of highway on command with a bigger turbo. Of course, I had the Smarty stacked with a TST and MP-8. Smoke was pretty much on demand regardless of turbo with a Smarty stack.

I don't know what it's like where you live, but people around here don't like smoke much. I kind of liked the lack of smoke with the puny stock turbo.

Haha, your the first Ive heard that says it doesnt smoke much!! I guess everyones perception of how much it smokes varies... and if it aint slippin now, it soon will be!

Be happy!

Be happy it doesn't smoke. Mine's sitting in the bedroom, disconnected due to excessive smoking. Marco's supposed to release the fix soon.

OK, well we'll leave it on #9 for now and see what happens. I went on to the mads electronics web site an found the wild catcher setting for the stock set up, is this a new setting or is that what I already have in the programmer? Also, I thought the motor would be alittle louder with the timing, but it seems to be just as quiet as before (sounds like a gasser), is this normal? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get as much out of the programmer as possible. Thanks

The Smarty comes loaded with the moderate torque management.

If you load the wild program, say goodbye to your clutch!

If you look at the website, the factory loaded Smarty program is a mild torque management load. Moderate TM is the highest level of TM on a stock truck on a S04/06. You can go one up above the factory load to moderate, or back down to stock TM. You have to go to aftermarket section to get the Wild program, and they caveat that you need at LEAST an aftermarket clutch or Auto Trans.

Yep, Smarty comes with mild TM. And dont even consider going to wild TM unless you have a built transmission, or unless you like walking. Stock auto WILL NOT handle it for very long!!

I've had my Smarty installed for about a year on #3 and all was good (except too much smoke). Then about a month ago I kicked it up to #9 just to see what would happen.

I'm on a straight open country road at 60 MPH in 6th gear and nailed it. The black smoke rolled and it pulled really hard to about 75 then powered right through the clutch.

I tried 3 or 4 more times only not so extreme and it still slipped.

Now it slips on #3,

so I put it back to stock and so far it's OK.

I called SBC and I will be installing a new HD clutch and flywheel as soon as my trans. jack gets here from Summit.

That #9 setting is impressive to say the least and I'm looking forward to trying it with a decent clutch.

Ray

P. S. I am also looking forward to a less smoke program from Smarty.

I'll bet it will slip on any level above 1 with mild TM if you gun it. That's been my experience, at least on my truck's G56.

with my smarty on #3 i have very acceptable smoke levels. only smokes if i get on it real hard at low engine speed with no boost. under normal city driving there is no smoke. tried #5 one weekend, power was great, smoke was way too much. . i'll update my smarty once the low smoke high power program comes out
