I want to pull the trigger on a Smarty Jr. for my 06 Dodge. But I pull a 16000 lb. fiver and don't want to be cleaning the right side of the fiver every other day of soot. I have a Superchips, and it is not bad, and no soot. Anybody else pulling and have any soot problems on the tow setting?

I love everything about the smarty jr except the smoke. I just pulled a 12,000 lb trailer through the coast range in the tow mode, and had plenty of power, and low egt's. Even on the flats, there was a constant haze that I could see from headlights behind me. I'm willing to sacrifice smoke for lower egt but i"m not crazy about it, now my bumper is black for the first time.

I was rumming the Granatelli big G milage miser, that had 50hp 150ft. I got about the same milage as the smarty jr, with no smoke but the egt's were higher.

How was the mileage pulling in tow mode? I'm about to do a 1000 mile trip from San Diego to Flagstaff Az (70000 feet elev) and back with a fair load in the truck and 7000 lbs of trailer and was going to try the 70hp setting. I had the Jr. on 40hp, then tried 70hp briefly and back to 40 mostly just commuting and a couple short trailer pulls from the sand and gravel yard. I saw the same haze in the mirror you talk about, all the time, even just taking it real easy. I thought maybe I had something wrong so I put it back to stock; haze went away. The Smarty Jr (and the Sr also???) make a deal out of not bumping rail pressure, which I like. With only timing and fuel left to adjust I guess a little smoke is to be expected to get benefits. I love the drivability though. Amazing throttle response.

TIA, Bruce

I have only tried the 40 hp mode so far. My truck smokes slightly starting out but after getting up to speed it seems to go away.
Great throttle response and the engine seems to be "smoother/quieter" but that could be my imagination.
Tomorrow I am going to check the tire dia. setting. My Mich. LTX 235-80-17 are 31. 8" in dia. but will try to set 31. 7 to compensate for wear.

1/2 of my last trip was empty, the other 1/2 was pulling heavy. Total average was 15(230 miles, 16 gallons). I run in the tow mode all the time, and average 15-16 in town. I havent done many long trips yet, but it seems to be arround 18-19.

Started my trip from Az. to Alaska pulling my 15k 5th. whl.
Smarty Jr. results so far: 1st 726 miles I avg. 9. 6 mpg on setting #2, truck smokes alot and is making my RV dirty. I had a headwind part way and drove 60-65 mph. W/o the Smarty I was getting 11. 3 mpg towing with the same conditions. I do have a lot more power on the hills though which is great. 6th gear 99. 9% of the time.
I am ambivelent about it right now. May go to #1 position tomorrow.

My results have been the same as above.

Slight smoke on #1.

Much smoke on #2 particularily after a shift. Plenty power to tow on #2 but it messes up my 5th. whl. and truck.

Thanks! Actually ordered the gauges and exhaust brake back in 04 before the truck got here from the dealer! :-laf Should update my sig.

Pulled the 5ver for the first this past weekend after installing the Jr. The 5ver weighs in at 14,000 loaded. Pulling using the "tow" mode I noticed a much better power feel but also "lots" of smoke. I'm running the stock exhaust and PSM with AFE air filter. Just more info to add for those considering.

I have had some smoke issues with the Jr and it is mainly due to the air filter. My AFE gets dirty enough with in about 10k miles to get start a smoke show. And I'm not sure if my filter minder even works anymore but it doesn't even move.
