Does anyone know if the Smarty Jr will work just fine with aftermarket injectors (KAX, 80hp)?

On the Smarty Website, the Smarty can be "calibrated" for aftermarket injectors, but not sure about the Smarty Jr.

Will running the Smarty Jr with non stock injectors hurt the engine?

Will the 40hp, 70hp, etc settings on the Smarty Jr be even greater with non stock injectors?

Just want to be sure I'm not harming anything before I hook up the Smarty Jr to the truck.

Thanks,

Louis

I believe there are no downloads for the JR. that reduces the timing advance to compensate for a larger injector. If you are at the stage of having or desiring larger injectors, I'd say get the regular Smarty and download the aftermarket injector programs or use a SW without timing advance.

I emailed MADS about this and the reply from Stefano Negrini was that Smarty Jr is really only for stock trucks. If you have modified your injectors, turbo, etc, you need the Smarty.

Wish I would have figured this out before I purchased the Jr. I was only able to discern this and then get concerned when I went and looked at the software downloads for the Smarty. Everything else on their website doesn't mention this.

I have a Smarty Jr for sale on Craigs list... :{

Thanks,

Louis

Your signature doesn't say which transmission you have but with PML trans cover I assume it's an auto.

You have an 03 and if it's a standard engine (250 Hp) you more than likely have the 47RE. With just the 80 hp injectors your already over what the auto is rated for. With a smarty it will increase your stock 250 engine up to the 305 engine level and then add the smarty hp levels on top of that your transmission will not live long especially towing.

If you have the 48RE than it can handle more than the 47RE but with the 80 hp injectors your already pushing a stock transmission and with a programmer or any other power enhancer your still pushing the envelope for the transmission.

I have a 48RE with the 305/555 motor. I suppose trans upgrades will be next on the list...

My intent is not to install the high hp software, just the one for towing. I want to lower my EGTs and improve my efficiency.

I emailed KLM Performance and they are going to exhange my Smarty Jr for a Smarty. They are a great company with great people. :)

One thing I have noticed with my Bladerunner and larger ID exhaust (3. 5" vs. 4") is that my tailpipe inside color is not dark black any longer, but a nice dark brownish gray color.

I hoping the Smarty improves things even more.

LRutigiano i have kax injectors and lost my clutch when i put smarty on setting 3 which is 60hp. you should really consider trans upgrades before using smarty with injectors even when your empty. and i wouldn't use it at all to tow with untill you have trans upgrades. just my . 02

Oneshotkyle,

Thanks for the heads up. :)

The KAX injectors really woke up my truck. I can tow up any pass in the Pacific NW now without trying to punch my foot thru the floorboard. It was annoying before that mod. And I'm getting the same or better MPGs.

I had a camper/boat combo before and the 5th wheel really made the truck struggle over any type of pass.

Do you have any specific recommendations for the trans (48RE) upgrades? I already have a PML cover that adds 2 extra qts of ATF.

A friend is running these injectors, ATS intake, Air Raid cold air and a juice/attitude and has no issues with his 48RE and he is pulling a larger 5th wheel than mine with larger tires/wheels.

Also, a buddy at work has been running the KAX injectors on his 03, again towing a larger 5th wheel than mine for 1000's of miles with no issues on the 48RE.

Regards,

Louis

although i am not up to date with the auto's it has been said that a bone stock stick shift with smarty is good to 90hp setting. the auto is good to the 60hp settings. if you search around a little about the smarty it tends to be alot more agressive on the bottom end than any other box i've seen. trust me spend a little money on the trans.

Sorry for the late comment. Have a Jr on my 2006, QC, 2500, 4X4, 48RE, plus DDP 50 HP injectors for about two weeks on the 40 hp setting. Performance = WOW! I contacted Bob Wagner prior to the order to ask about the Jr with the injectors and he said it would be "great". I plan to run at this setting for about 2K miles to verify mileage (truck has 35K and all fuel used is in an Excel spreadsheet so I can compare how changes affect mileage).

I realize that the transmission is the 'weak link' which I may have to deal with. My son has my old 1998. 5 (same configuration as the 2006) with the Banks Stinger (+75 HP) and it has the ORIGINAL 47RE with NO repairs (only scheduled maintenance) and it is going strong at 150K miles!

Wferenz, please keep us informed about your experiences with the injectors and Jr combination.

Have you tried the 70hp setting?

Smoke level on the 40hp with inj?

Any timing rattle?

Guys,

I have contacted Marco at Smarty Electronics and he said that the Smarty Jr was developed for stock trucks and that if you have an aftermarket turbo or injectors, you should get the Smarty Sr.

Thanks,

Louis

I have only tried the 40 hp setting and will leave it there until I can check mileage. I have not noticed an increase in smoke or any rattle. Other than a very smooth increase in power, the only other thing I noticed is a slight 'roughness' in the idle. Idle is a constant 750 rpm and just seems a little 'raspy'.

I will post mileage numbers when I get at least 2K at the 40 hp setting. One thing on mileage. I have only driven the truck with the Smarty Jr in town and the overhead went from 16. 2 at the start to 17. 5. Prior to the Smarty Jr. , in town overhead mileage went DOWN and stayed DOWN.

The Jr was purchased after checking with Bob Wagner. Wish he would chime in on the injector issue... I hope problems don't show up at the higher hp settings. How about it Bob?
