I have only used my Smarty Jr on the 'Economy' setting for the most part. I notice that I hear what I assume are the injectors firing on the 40hp setting. I have set it back to stock several times and I do not hear it when I'm in stock mode. Is this normal? Anyone else notice this?

I have been running the SMJR on tow setting for about three months now (sometimes with the new beta software) I don't feel that there is a whole lot difference in the sound. could just be my old ***** ears though. .

I think the advanced timing makes it sound like that.

04. 4 3500 4wd cc dully 373 6speed sjr 50k

94 2500 2wd xc 354 auto 250k

I agree. May just be "timing rattle" @ low rpm's. I think that is all that is changed on the Smarty Jr. "LOW" setting (timing, only).

lIf that's what it is it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

fwiw, I don't equate this with timing rattle but this is my first diesel so I guess it's possible. It's an electronic ticking sound that comes on when I am rolling at say 12-1500 rpm and jump on the throttle (not flooring it but getting my foot pretty deep in it)... ...

Mike, software 1 (economy) is timing advance only with no added fueling over stock.

You have to remember its a diesel its meant to rattle, the retarded timing is what keeps it quiet, hotter egt's.

The stock timing curve is written for emissions purpose's.

Thanks

BOB, If mode 1 on the Jr is timing only, why so much smoke?

I don't equate the noise I'm hearing with the combustion process. It's definitely an electronic ticking noise (that I was assuming was the injectors firing). I don't hear it on stock setting. I'm going to set it on tow mode for a while to see if I notice it then I guess. It may be that I can just hear it now, I was mostly wanting to make sure it wasn't something wrong. I do notice the truck being louder under acceleration (in the cab) but that's not the noise I'm talking about here.

I don't have any smoke but I have an '03 and some other mods. The smoke comes from the torque management software. The economy setting changes the fueling curve as well to improve throttle response similar to some chips do with boost fooling. The JR doesn't lie or fool the ecm it has a new more resposive program. I am not sure it the timing is dynamic, changes amount of advance throughout the rpm range, static, gives a flat x degrees thoughout. Smarty must do it better as most people who have tried other chips, boxes etc seem to like it the best.

They are working on it...

On the 3rd beta tune now...

Just loaded SW#1 from beta 3 and went around the block, NO SMOKE!!... well a little at 1000 rpms in 6th at 30 mph :D

2700 feet, 61*, about 65% humidity... Just real light acceleration like normal and saw zero smoke... Very happy. . will report more as I get a few more miles on it.

John, Are you able to load Smarty sr programs on the jr??

When and how will the rest of us country bumpkins load the newest/latest on our Smarty Jrs. ??? Is it available to all yet???

I am convinced that rpm management cures the smoking problem. Don't lug it down but keep the rpm's up over 1800 +/-. I have also convinced myself that the SJ on setting #1 gives me about 1. 5 mpg more.

I don't even see 1800 rpms until I am in 6th... . I am not going to drive that way, my mileage is much better lower, and its very drivable. . And with the 3rd beta I haven't seen any smoke yet...

The software, when finished, will be on the madselectronics website for download.

WOW! I think Marco is ON to something with this 4th beta! I am getting alot less smoke and the same (or maybe a little better throttle response on launch). power seems about the same throughout the range ( I am just going by seat of the pants here) I would guess about a 60-70 % reduction in smoke @ moderate accel. Of course my testing has been done,so far, @ 66 deg. in humid conditions. But I LIKE it!

Another day of test driving #4 warmer today (low seventys) slightly more smoke but reduces after the truck really warmed up. Love the power. heard some talk about sightly more t. lag but I didn't notice that.

Randall its a beta software. I have it. shoot me an email
