Competition Closest sled pulls?

Looking for more fueled rpm for a 2001 24valve pulling truck. We have been leaning toward the Smarty because of the adjustability, but the 1st priority is to raise the rpm limit. What do you all think? Smarty or Redline for 4K? are there any other options? Also, is the stock valvetrain on a 24 valve safe to 4K? Any help is appreciated

Thanks, Dave

What you want is a Redline Comp box, but the engine isn't safe at 4000  :--) without valvetrain, head work, studs & more. That box is only made for modified engines that were built for the high revs.

Stick in some F1 valve springs and you should be good to go after you get the redline box.

If you are just going to run street diesel class its not a must to have the redline box to be competitive though.

An Edge Drag comp works pretty well by itself. The advantage of the redline is that you can run 4th lo... with a drag comp you will have to run 2nd hi (with a 6 speed).

4K you will need the redline..... As mentioned you will need upgraded valve springs to turn you motor this fast. Also most trucks really loose HP over 3450 or so even with the RD. With some good mods though we were able to continue to gain HP to over 3900 on a VP truck using the RD box.

if $$$ isnt that big of an issue run both. The redline box will give you the RPM's but the smarty will help broaden the power band significantly, they don't bring to much to the table with HP but when you put one on the dyno to dial in, you can see am much better power band WITH smarty.

I thought the smarty would actually make you lose horsepower when you put another fueling box with it. If your going for all out performance prolly just the redline is your best bet from what I have read.

Yr not to far away I got both if u want to try them and they dont work well together for the HI end user , its ok but nothing any other combo does now top end the redlines pull but it does it better with no smarty ,,, TST can get u close to 4000 if not over with the wright injector u need to send it to them and tell them what yr doing with the truck and talk to the wright person

According to our dyno runs with a drag comp and tst pm3 the smarty raised the HP between 15-25 HP (depending on truck), but with both it broadened the power band between 150-250 RPMs. We have not done one with a redline box yet so unfortunately I can not speak to how it works with that particular combo. But I can say that I run a smarty stacked with my comp daily and have no issues what so ever. I play with both all the time and even run timing with both boxes and have had no issues at all with stock sticks and charger. We have put a smarty on an 02 with a TsT pm3 stacked with an EZ box that is a pulling truck (in the making still) but it has inj. charger, water/meth, and the usuall basically. And the truck made 625 on a dyno dynamics load dyno, then not touching anything loaded a smarty on level 9 (thats w/ timing) and it gained 20 HP but it opened the range over 220 RPMs. He has pulled the truck back to back and did the same thing, one w/o smarty and one with and the pull with he picked up 15 ft. Now giving it may have gained a little having pulled and maybe he got a better start on all of those variables along with that, but the owner/driver said he could feel the difference in the truck and its performance/response.

Thanks for all the responses. The truck is running a Drag Comp now, hrvp44 and big set of scheid injectors. Broke the pressure plate at the end of last season, so that set him back a little. We were curious about the valve float at that rpm also, thanks. The head is studded and block/head fire ringed, but still running stock valve springs. It may be an issue with gearing as Jwilliams3 suggested, its 3. 55 w/nv4500 and he was pulling in 4th low last year.

Thanks, Dave

4th low with 3. 55's is a big gear. You might try getting ahold of DPS I think they have some different gears for the NV4500 that will let you get into range.

I think he has a 4. 10 swap worked out with somebody around here local. It's a little work, but we have more time than money :)

If the deal fails... I know a guy who has rears/gears complete units or parts etc. He is a good guy & has been doing rears/transmissions for 30 years. His prices are hard to beat on most stuff. ;)
