Hi guys, I'm considering a smarty. Right now I've got an edge juice with attitude that I'm thinking about selling. I'm considering a smarty because I want some more options with power levels and adjustability when it comes to tires size changes and so forth. I'm also getting kind of tired of pulling the edge out every time I want to experiment a little with mileage or power or go in for service. So my question is this. I'm all stock except for my 20" rims, K&N air filter and aeroturbine can. Is anyone having problems with their stock transmission's with this thing? It's gonna be a while until I can upgrade the transmission. Also, how about fuel mileage, are you seeing increases and if so, at what level. At what level should I run the smarty with a stock transmission to be safe until i get upgrades for it. Does the smarty have a boost fooler?

Ok thanks in advance for any inputs you might have.

If your wanting my honest opinion... If your not planning on big power down the road and stacking, I wouldn't even consider a downloader. Sometimes I think how nice life was pre-downloader when I had NO problems.

I was planning on getting a smarty for my dad's Christmas present but after the problems my truck had after loading the Smarty on I think I'll play the safe route and leave only the tst on it.

You'll get various mixed opinions on this issues. Obviously, the ones who sell the downloaders will tell you they are 110% perfect. Just ask the lucky ones who have problems from downloaders... Like myself :-laf

Out of the 10-12 in my local crew with Smarties none have any issues other than increased tire wear... ... ..... none of them had a bddl first either ;)

i did have the bdbl first and mine works great i think its hit or miss when changing downloaders. i have seen it go both ways.

I'm sure you will get a variety of opinions. My experience has been nothing but positive. It seems that folks reporting problems have other engine mods (injectors, turbos, etc) or are stacking with another box.

IMHO, the stock 48re can handle the 60 hp setting on the Smarty. Excellent drivability and turbo lag is practically gone. If you start playing with 90 hp and up, build a good transmission first and watch your EGTs.

I think that is the key right there. Those of us that have used other downloaders prior to Smarty actually have enough experience to know when something is just not right. :-laf :p

I agree. After having the Bully Dog on for so long, when I changed to the Smarty I VERY QUICKLY found its weakness in various areas...

mine makes more power now hands down with the smarty. but again i have seen it go both ways. i guess it all depends on what version on the bullydog you have, and how the ecm takes to it. the only thing that i did with mine was kept it updated with the latest software. and i will do the same with my smarty. or i just have extremely good luck. :D

I dont' plan on stacking at all. I just want reliable extra power with more adjustability and don't want to have to pull the thing out for any reason like I have to do with the edge juice. The juice is definetly reliable as I've had zero problems with it but it's not as adjustable as I would like. It also doesn't let me adjust tire sizes in the ECM. I know other programmers have had big problems and I want to make sure I don't have the same big problems with the smarty. With the box, I can just unplug it if it starts giving me fits. A programmer is a little bit of a different story.

Viper,

The Smarty isn't very adjustable. To change settings you have to go thru the re-loading process... You can't adjust it on the fly.

Most have had good luck with downloaders... But when you don't it's not as simply as taking if off and being back to normal. :)

Bob, did any of your crew stack the Smarty with another device?

I'm using the smarty with minimal mods and keep it on either 30hp or 60hp level... . no previous downloader... . I'm very happy. One of my criteria was also not having to pull off a box when going in for service.

Well, I sell just about every brand out there and have tried most stacked combos. I did have a problem with the first smarty I got. It was on my personal truck and it did have a BDDL on before. But I got that straightened out pretty easily. To tell you the truth, theres more profit on most all of the other brands, but i HIGHLY reccommend the smarty. I had several customers running the BDDL and Triple Dog, now I have a stack of bullydogs to sell for my customers. That pretty much speaks for itself. All I've had to do to sell the Smarty is download it and tell them to try it. Everyone who has tried one has bought one, no matter what they were running at the time. One guy came in and he was running the BDDL CL version and I said, "Here, lets download this and you can just try it out for a week or so and let me know what you think. " He left my shop, went about 1/2 mile and turned around and payed me. He called me for three days telling me how impressed he was. But anyway, just my 2 cents.

Mine doesn't boost fool, not sure if it does it on 03-04s (I'm sure that someone will chime in). I'ma guessin that this is because of the electronic waste gate. I love my smarty, but I wish that we would see a boost fooling download available in the future. Those of us running manual gates and/or different turbos would surely appreaciate it --HINT, HINT... .

We guys, I'm going to have to disagree. I had the TDDL on before the Smarty, and have also switched back and forth between the two until Marco finally came out with this last software. Now I run the Smarty all the time without any problems.

I purchased the Smarty knowing that Marco would continue to inprove it until it was one of the best programers out there. I think he has done an exceptional job. This is just my experiences with the Smarty and Marco.

Brain and Luken, Sorry to hear that you had problems.
