Does anyone know if its ok for the engine to tow an 11k 5er with the Revo timing set to #4 (economy)?

How much more timing do you get with the #4 (economy, more timing than #2) setting vs. the default #2 (advanced timing)?

With 80hp KAX injectors would the economy mode work ok? I tried the aftermarket injector timing (#3) and hated it. Truck ran terrible.

How much more economy (MPGs) are you seeing with the timing set to #4?

Are you noticing a reduction in EGTs?

I'm towing the 5er to Kahneeta tomorrow after work and want to try LEVEL 1 with the timing set to #2 or #4 but don't want to hurt the engine...

Maybe a simple answer doesn't exist, but the Revo instructions don't give me enough info or facts so that I understand what the different parameters are really changing or effecting and I don't want to keep experimenting...

This is what I want to see in the Revo instructions (as an example using timing):

Timing:

1 - Stock; no change

2 - Advanced; timing advanced xdeg BTDC which will increase mpgs (range)and decrease EGTs (deg F range)

3 - Retarded timing; for aftermarket injectors because ..... (give explanation), ie-less rattle, why the need for retarded timing???

4 - Economy; more advanced than 2 (how much more), (what are the advantages... better fuel economy, lower EGTs??), give the disadvantages (more rattle, do not tow, etc... )

Do this for all the parameter options.

Thanks,

Louis

Have fun in Kahneeta, we were supposed to be over there this weekend also but some things came up.

#1 my wife had plans,

#2 I broke my truck and have to go back to Sisters to get my trailer tomorrow night.

#4 will be a lot of timing. I think you could run it, but listen to how the motor sounds.

I don't think I would tow on #4, I would tow on 3 or maybe 2.

Aftermarket injectors effectively advance the timing on their own. I am not the best to describe why, but that is why there is less timing on the aftermarket injector tune.

Kahneeta was awesome! They are totally geared for the kiddies and adults too... They play movies at 9pm outside near the pool house on a large screen. FRI night was Happy Feet and SAT night was Shrek 2. There were tons of parents and kids just enjoying life. Played putt putt golf, some video games, ate soft serve ice cream after swimming... Two great Bar-b-que nights and went for long walks along the Warm Springs river. Going back over the 4th and will watch the fireworks in Warm Springs. They will also have a kiddy parade with decorated bikes.

I didn't run the Smarty, still don't have clear enough answers for me on what effects the different parameters are really controlling and the whole Smarty Jr smoke issue has me concerned about making the 5er black. Right now, I have 0 smoke under any conditions.

I hear ya on the smoke issue. I'm about done with the Smarty if they don't get this issue resolved quickly. I can run mine on SW1 with the #3 timing, stock TQ management and still get noticeable smoke cursing with a very light load. I wonder why a timing only program will make smoke unless the program changes the fueling curve, then it isn't timing only. It could be the EGT cooling effect of the advanced timing is dropping boost too low for the fueling curve. I can definitely see lower egts and lower boost on any of the added timing SW's.

As for towing with advanced timing. Well, that's a question I'd like to know the answer to also. I started a post a few days ago about the effects of advanced timing and cylinder temps/pressures. With the electronic boxes, we'd can't know the timing like the old 12Vs so we just take it on faith that it isn't too much. I think the aftermarket could give us more info without giving up their proprietary info. Anyway, to play it safe, I won't tow in #2 or #4 of the Smarty's timing choices, 3 should be fine. #2 is probably OK.

With the Jr beta 4 I am getting VERY VERY little smoke and no smoke once boost is on, above 5psi. I am very happy with it and have no trace of soot on my trailer... . I wouldn't let smoke affect your decision on a Jr. . Marco has found that the reason for smoke on timing only is that our fuel is poorer quality than the european fuel (he gets no smoke on his 06 on the Jr)... So the betas have retarded the timing and #4 is a happy medium that has no/minimal smoke on the low end and great EGT's on the upper end... Power is great as well, especially considering I don't put any more fuel than stock thru my system.

The Smarty Jr started as 4. 11 software 1,3,5 and Marco/Bob has put out that towing is safe on any level... Timing is very similar on 1,2,3 on the Jr, with fueling being the biggest difference.

Timing on the CR is very retarded from the factory for emissions, so a little extra timing is a good thing and the Smarty probably puts it back where it would have been if the CR was the motor is the 90's.
