I just added a Smarty, I have a new trans on the way, but went ahead and installed Catcher #3, there program without anything else, this is to add 60 HP per the book, so far I can feel the added power, it has a faster idle, and is very smooth, once the trans is installed I will see what I have. For those who are towing what are the settings your using, I have a stock engine, and my combined weight is 21000-22000 pounds. I could go to Catcher #5, but don't want to really increase the fuel burn.

I tow on sw#3, no matter which Smarty software I have loaded. I am usually between 18/20k loaded with my 5vr, any higher level on the Smarty and I have to watch my egt's constantly. On sw#3, I never exceed 1250*, even on the hardest pulls, and this fueling has ample power.

I'm using SW1 with TQ2, TM2 and RP1.

I have 80hp injectors that add approx 125 ft-lbs torque at 1600rpm...

My EGT's never exceed 1200F even on the hardest pull with the 5er up the steepest grade. My max boost is approx 26psi with the stock turbo. I can easily climb any grade at 55mph or faster in 3rd and it will even accelerate when going 55mph up the hill. It will try to chug up the hill in OD, if I let it... but you want to keep rpms above 1500 when towing up hills...

I have considered trying SW3 with my set-up but don't want to increase the kill rate on the transmission...

Also, please be aware that EVERY truck is different and Smarty responds differently. I have tried other settings of RP, TQ and TM and have found the above settings seem to work best for me...

SW5 is 90hp... If you can truly ADD up the hp, I'm at a theoretical setting of 110hp (80hp injectors + SW1) and LOVE it. Try SW5 and see if you like it.

I know someone that has Smarty Jr and the same injectors I have and he tows the 5er with SW3 (100hp) on his stock engine/turbo truck and big tires.

IMO - you should also consider a new intake manifold such as ATS Arcflow or CFM+ and a true CAI with a synthetic filter for max breathing and lowest EGT while towing.

Note: the idle on our trucks was bumped to 800 from 750 by a previous Chrysler ECM flash, since the Smarty's software has the most current flash, you will have had this new idle speed applied...

Now, if only the smarty could adjust idle speed... I want a 650-700rpm idle back like the 12v trucks have

I would like a idle speed adjustment option too, but I have the latest Smarty update Aug 28, 2009 and my idle is still 750rpm?

Okay, where can all of us "non-Smarty" people go to find all of the info in easy to understand terms on how to set a Smarty to get what we want? In other words, what settings run best for mileage, which is best for power and acceleration for a stock truck w/o tearing it up, what's the best combo of both, etc? There seem to be a lot of different settings, SW1, TQ2,for example and I have no idea what all of them mean. I'd like to purchase a Smarty very soon, but would like to have a clearer understanding. Anyone know of a website or link that could help out?

I changed my settings from SW1 (TQ2, TM2 and RP1) to SW3 (TQ2, TM3 and RP1) and love it. I tried SW3 (TQ2, TM2 and RP1) for a few miles, but thought I could hear/feel "pinging" from too much timing. Then I changed to TM3.

I drove bobtail and also towed the 5er. My boost went up from 26psi to 31 or 32 psi and my fun factor really went up. When towing, my EGTs are actually lower than with SW1 with TM2... I don't know why, but I like it.

I entered a freeway on-ramp w/o the trailer and decided to roll the coal (not too aggressive) and the portable DVD player on the center console went flying into the backseat :-laf I started at 5-10mph and was doing 70mph in the blink of an eye...

I kept looking for any smoke or haze out of the tailpipe, but couldn't see any. I don't want it to smoke...

From the Mads Electronics - Smarty - CaTCHER - Dodge Tuning - Home site:

Tuning instructions for the REVOlution software

We provide you a whole new tuning concept with a handheld performance tuner.

For the first time the Cummins engine performance tuning software can now be customized by the customer.

The REVOlution starts here!

How does it work?

If you prefer the Smarty's default software configuration, simply skip the “Adjust Options” menu and choose the CaTCHER level you

prefer, as in the previous Smarty softwares. If you want to change the default setting of any (or all…) of the customizable items, you

can enter the “ Adjust Options” menu , navigate with the “ > “ and “ < “ keys to the item you want to customize and enter your

choice. Done! Smarty will do the rest. Once the end of the item list is reached, Smarty will store your selections in its memory. In

this way, your preferred selections will be applied every time you program your truck. As a simple example, if you set the Speedlimiter

to “100”, Smarty will always use that value for all ECM updates, until you change the value again or return the truck back to

stock. When you enter the “ECM update“ menu you will find the chapter: “Adjust Options“. Once entered, this menu allows you to

choose among several items and levels of customization.

Speed-limiter:

From 25 to 250 mph in one mile increments

Torque Management:

# 0 - Default

# 1 - Stock

# 2 - Mild

# 3 - Moderate

# 4 - Wild ( aftermarket clutch / AT Transmission recommended )

Then higher the # you choose then less torque management remains and then more aggressive the throttle response becomes.

Injection Timing:

# 0 - Default

# 1 - Stock

# 2 - for stock injectors

# 3 - for aftermarket Injectors ( less timing advance than # 2 )

# 4 - for fuel economy ( more timing advance than level # 2 )

Important! The odd numbered SW's ( 1,3,5,7 & 9 ) use the advanced timing and the even numbered SW's ( 2,4,6 & 8 ) use the stock

timing.

This is only true if you don't adjust the options! With the Revo you can choose ANY timing you want, no matter if the Catcher you'll

download is odd or even! You CAN, add timing to the software's that have none, or use the stock timing in the odd # ones. Your

pleasure... . By definition for all adjustable options the default is # 2. EXCEPT for the timing. The timing has two defaults. # 1 for the

even numbered SW's ( stock timing ) # 2 for the odd numbered SW ( advanced timing ). To avoid confusion and to help the customer

in returning all levels to default ( if need be ), key # 0 is used to return Smarty back to the default levels. This is most important for

the timing. When Smarty is set back to default with key # 0, the even numbered software's will use the stock timing and the odd

numbered ones the advanced timing.

Rail pressure:

# 0 - Default

# 1 - Stock

# 2 - Mild

# 3 – Moderate*

# 4 – Wild* (aftermarket injectors are a MUST)

* In order to avoid damage to the injection system, do not use for prolonged time.

Wastegate: ( for the 2004. 5 and up trucks with the electronic wastegate only )

# 0 - Stock (On)

# 1 - Off ( for aftermarket turbo )

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the great info Louis! Much appreciated. Looks like I'll have to study what combo will work best for me.

Thanks again!

I just returned from a trip with the 5th wheel in tow, the Smarty really works, I have it on sw#3 with no options selected. I am going to play with it a little and add tq #3, tm #2, and RP #2, but what is the thinking behind the speed limiter?, I have mine at stock setting, should this be adjusted to like 125 mph?,thanks

The speed limiter is so your truck does not defuel, or shutdown at 107 mph, when your side by side with a Dmax:-laf:-laf:-laf.

125mph will work, I have mine at 130.

Ron I would recommend leaving RP at #1. Since U will be towing your RP will be high anyway, and high RP wears out our injectors that much quicker. Some don't like adding timing to our motors, especially while towing, but I run Timing at #4 all the time and don't have any problem, and I believe it helps MPG. Just my . 02
