YUP Bob, he did finally get the 216 without the Smarty software - just as I eventually did - but like I said, it's MUCH harder to get WITHOUT the Smarty loaded.

I suspect the same might also be true with the Comp or other devices/downloaders that alter engine fueling/timing.

I guess the real question, if my theory holds, is about how FAR out of optimum condition must a VP-44 be before the Smarty or other devices push it over the edge and trigger codes?

Most cases to date involve substantial dead-pedal and related issues along with the 216 error code - but in cases where it is triggered with NO accompanying engine performance issues, what might the alternatives be?

Remove devices and programming to bleed that last available mile outta the VP-44 - or consider it a shot across the bow, and get the sucker (VP-44) outta there?

Gary,

I first got the 216 error code last Oct on a trip up to Oregon, was on the go pedal and had an OTR truck pull out of a line of trucks to pass them, I had to get off the pedal and on the brakes, CEL came on immediately. Had the dead pedal a couple of times, 216 code about six times, power was still there, but I had another trip to Oregon planned, considering I had 6 or 7 shots across the bow, I bit the bullet and had the VP swapped out. Could I have made it up and back, I'll never know, and happy to not have tried? After speaking with techs and reading various posts, I've come to believe that sudden deceleration from a full run which heats up the VP is the beginning of the end of the VP44.

As Bob has posted numerous times, once you see the 216 code, its just a matter of time before it leaves you stranded.

I wish you could get inside of your old VP, snoop around and see what is out of whack mechanically or if it is an electrically generated fault.

Take care,

Casey

Thanks for the helpful post Casey - sure wish I had the expertise to do a careful and detailed autopsy on my pump. BUT, instead, I've pretty much decided to send it to II for THEIR autopsy, and repair what they find has failed or gone out of tolerance.

That original pump has ALWAYS had fuel well enhanced by additives, and carried excellent fuel PSI, other than several low PSI incidents of VERY short duration and miles - the mechanical portion SHOULD be in excellent condition.

I'm betting on a weak or out of range internal control board - but the actual repair will have to wait until September, after some of our RV/fishing activities have been completed.

By the way, 111 degrees here in Canyon City at 4 p. m. this afternoon!

Is there an 02 left out there that has not had the 216 code and the origianl vp replaced yet?

My brothers truck is an 02 with original VP pump and no 216 code and it's been "tapped" for almost 3 years.

emissions testing

I have to take my truck for emission testing. Is there a better smarty setting other than stock to help me pass? I have a II hrvp44 and it blows a little smoke with truck on stock setting.

Had mine smog tested in Reno, NV w/Smarty on #9 and passed with flying colors. Don't know if it's the same criteria in your neck of the woods.

Mine is still the OEM VP44. I have just turned 46k with pumped tapped for just a hair over 4k. Crossing my fingers, 45k to 65k seems to be a magic number.

I just turned over 171,600 miles on my original VP-44 with no problem. Just make sure you use good clean fuel and add a little Marvel Mystry Oil to your tank and the VP should last a good long time. ;)

Good luck, I hope you get a better response from II than I did.

I went to the trouble of attaching a note to the core indicating my desire for the cause of death of my VP44 I even provided a e-mail address to make it easy--No response :( I even sent PM's to Brett Williams-- still no answer :(

I'm sure too much time has gone by now to ever find out but it sure would have been nice to know what died. I know they are busy but after laying out the big green for the HRVP44 it would have left me a much happier camper, I am happy with the product regardless.

HMMmmmm - that's NOT good news! (OR good company PR!) :(

Maybe someone from II would care to respond?

Did you send yours in for a complete rebuild - and simply request an actual cause of failure on the core, or did you only want the direct failure cause corrected, WITHOUT a total rebuild unless absolutely necessary?

Might make a difference, but still... :(

This thread needs the title changed to, Smarty, the new rabbit trail...

Merrick

Could be... . ;)

It seems to be a vastly overstuffed thread where a few guys are sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for something of REAL importance or impact to surface.

Judging by the vast silence of new, directly significant Smarty stuff or revelations being reported, maybe this one needs to be put out of it's misery? :-laf

Now that the 3rd gen stuff is in production, maybe we will see some of the dyno refinement for the 2nd gens that the 3rd gens got?

I would love to see it optimized for HP and rpm with the most popular electronic enhancements.

Too bad that didn't happen before the new product was launched. I had high hopes!

Dave

I'll keep it short so the thread contamination is at a minimum :-laf

Gary - K7GLD,

I sent it in as a core exchange, just wanted to know what broke.

AH - that sorta makes sense - I doubt many rebuilders want to spend extra time for an core autopsy to satisfy a customers curiosity - but in my case, there won't BE any "core" - I want my own original VP-44 checked, fixed, and returned to me - so the autopsy will be a PART of the repair... ;) :D

Bob Wagner

Hey Bob,

a couple thousand posts ago you said that you had some new labels made up for the updated Smarty's. I had asked for one of those and did not receive it?

Was there a problem getting them made or did I just get overlooked.

If you can scan one and send me the file I will make it myself.

Hot!!!!

By the way, 111 degrees here in Canyon City at 4 p. m. this afternoon!

We just got home from spending a week in Bend Oregon, it was over 100° everyday

Not that it is any better here, my son said that it was 110° here Sunday

Should have stayed in Seaside... a cool 70° everyday.
