The "final" Smarty level
I was thinking about this. If there is a "next level" to the catcher ECM, and the Smarty represents this, then is there a "next level" to the Smarty? If so, what is it?
Ultimately, I think there is. Right now, you'll be able to download new programs into the Smarty and then into the ECM.
But what if you could MAKE YOUR OWN PROGRAM??? I mean, what if you want to experiement with big timing retard at low rpm/high boost levels. What if you could adjust the overall timing of your truck until you found the optimum MPG setup?
See, as it sits right now, you get some sweet software for your truck. But the sky's the limit on how many combinations could be conceived, and for what purposes. But the software is being developed by only one guy or a small handful of testers.
The ideal, then IMO is a software edit function that will work on a PC or Mac. Heck, maybe something as crude as having the data tables on an Excel sheet for manipulation.
Then, we could create a TDR forum where people could try out each other's softwares.
So instead of one engineer, you'dhave THOUSANDS of "software engineers" all working on optimizing the ECM for one purpose or another-- towing, mpg, mpg while towing, racing, pulling, whatever.
This kind of thing is already being done with electric guitar softwares. Different people can use their "line 6" boxes and come up with cool sounds. Then they can upload them to the Line 6 website and others can download them. It's a dream come true.
Unfortunately, the stakes are a little higher here. With a guitar sound, the wrong settings just sound bad. With wrong engine software, you can grenade a pricey metal assembly.
But you have to admit, isn't the idea tantalizing?? What if you wanted the 3cyl cold idle to engage at 40° instead of the 15° or so it's set at? What if you could make your OWN timing maps, and fueling maps? What if YOU controlled how the ECM responsed to APPS inputs?
Let your mind wander, and you can see that the Smarty could just be a bellweather of a radical revolution in how we think of performance software for our trucks...
