don't give up on the smarty, there are enough programs out that one will fit your needs, it sounds like to clear the smoke you should use a stock torque management program, do a google on mads electronics and you can find the programs on their site.

One of the main things the smarty does is give the truck a serious wakeup in the lower RPM's this is helpful in heavy traffic where you must jump out quickly, I have had some tinse moments when my truck was stock, trying to cut infront of oncoming traffic and having to wait for that second for the turbo to spool up, with the smarty my truck just goes, however the price for this is a considerable amount of smoke. with a fuel enhanced truck if you get on the go pedal heavy below about 1700rpm you will leave SMOKE!!, to avoid this pretend an egg is under the throttle until you get above this point then lay into it, I would rather have power/smoke controllable with my foot that anywhere else. give yourself a couple weeks to adjust to it, unloaded I have no issues, towing is where I have really had to learn, also I use the OD off button alot more now, which helps considerably,

BTW if someone is thinking about buying a smarty buy it from bob, I bought mine locally and wish I had bought from bob, bob knows these things and can get you hooked up right

I have to agree with what everyone is saying about changing your approach on driving style to eliminate the smarty smoke. I am on SW#3 and can row thru the gears (empty) with VERY little or no smoke. Key i have found is shifting at a higher RPM, i shoot for 2500 and found the truck is MUCH happier shifting there, not to mention it has improved my mileage. Any lugging of the engine will produce smoke like MAD! Again, sometimes thats whats wanted. If you want the added power, you need the fuel, unfourtunatley it doesnt take much left over create smoke. Bob has been great and will help the smarty addicted guys out as much as he can!

I'm not sure what version of smarty i have, but i can never clear the smoke going uphill, or towing. I towed a 16klbs boat from Texas to Maryland on setting #3, by the time I delivered the boat, the entire port side had a very thick film of suit. I'd love to know how to eliminate the smoke as well.

I had version 405 but am using beta 4. 4 right now. I had a real soot issue with the 405 but it is cleaned up a lot with the 4. 4. I can still lay a big black cloud out under the right lugging circumstances but on normal rpm towing it is way cleaner.

Ok, here is the update, Bob sent me the Beta 44 program and I dropped it into the smarty. I tried it on my automatic, and it had much less smoke than moderate or stock torque management, I have tried both with the latest version from the website. It does have some pretty extreme power, a little too much for my stock transmission I think, my brother has it on his 6 speed now and he says the smoke is less but the power is hard to control, spins the tires real easy. I emailed Bob and he sent me another program that I haven't tried yet, but I told him that the power was a little over the top and the smoke was improved but not perfect. I tried sw#3 and my brother has tried sw#1 and 3. The one thing that is really wierd about the smarty, and I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this, the Smarty downloads much much faster on my truck than it does on my brothers, only difference is his is 6 speed 2wd, and mine is auto 4wd. He also got a wierd DTC code when he had it one SW 1, something like "VIN not programmed" but it went away after I went back to stock, then dumped in SW #3. I will post when I try the software Bob just sent me, thanks alot for support with this issue Bob, great customer service.

The 4. 4 isn't near as touchy as the 4. 3. I am towing this weekend with the 4. 4, so on Wednesday I will be able to give some feedback.

4. 4 has less smoke then all other programs other then 4. 3.

Marco's programs.

Bob e-mailed me in short order that Marco is hard at work writing new programs for us. I think the towing and camper guys like me are having the most smoke issues. Driving style eliminates most of it but it would be nice to not have the egg under the pedal all the time. Great product and service from both of these guys. :)

You don't live in LA do you. :D

I did for three years, just moved out of there two months ago. With my '97 I can make day turn to night with one push of the throttle. When my exhaust came out the side my son would beg me to floor it when passing bus stops, it was great. In three years, I got pulled over twice. Once for shutting down the Grapevine due to too much smoke pulling the 5th wheel and the other was a random stop in Ontario by a cop who thought all the smoke was one of the coolest things he'd ever seen. :D

That's hilarious! We used to drive p. o. s. Ivecos at work and anytime we needed to "disperse" jaywalking or shuffling students in the streets we simply power braked the suckers, and may the soot fly. Results: instant dispersal. Not quite as effective as the water cannons at the G8 meeting in Germany but it was the best we could do. :)

observation and question....

On my smarty... with stock TQ management when i downloaded the #3 program I got good all around power and torque... when i went to #5 it was awesome but alot of smoke... (CLOUDS OF IT LOL) but when I tried #1 30 hp I got almost the same smoke as level #5 and above... much more than level#3

anyone else experience this... this isnt a complaint I am just wondering if anyone else has found a sweet spot with their smarty... maybe you just need to try different programs till one works the best for you.

Chris

Well, I started this post on Sunday morning and got a reply from Bob Wagner within a few minutes that he had a program that would get rid of the smoke clouds if I knew how to update the Smarty. But it is now Monday evening and I have not gotten any response or reply as to where I can get this software from Bob, please Bob I would like to have this software so that my brother can get rid of his buyers remorse that he has after purchasing a Smarty for almost $700. If the Smarty can be smoke free I would probably buy one myself.

Sometimes it takes a bit to find the correct software you need. MADS has several you can try to see if it helps the smoke. Performance boxes don't all act the same on all trucks so, what might work for you may not work for the next truck.

I'm sure you have it but... . MADS eletronics
