I didn't get to go to the track today but I put alot of miles on with the Smarty today...

Before I start - I have been running the Scarry Larry/tst stack for 15,000 miles. I blew the headgasket and everyone told me it was from too much timing. The weird thing is I have had numerous guys ride in my truck and there is NO sign of too much timing. No sounds, nothing. I just assumed that it was running extrememly high amounts of timing...

First trip - Downloaded 8. (no timing?) + tst 1x1 = Truck ran really smooth except a little timing rattle and it set 2 codes. I cleared the codes and tried it again. Same thing. Then the guy that was riding with me told me to turn the tst off. I put it on 0x0, No codes and NO timing rattle.

Next, Smarty-8 tst 2x2 - Serious timing rattle. Set codes like crazy.

Next, Smarty-9, tst OFF. Runs really smooth. I can't tell any difference in sound between the two.

Later on I tried...

Smarty - 7. With the tst on anything above 1x1 I get serious timing rattle, and codes.

I am in no way knocking the Smarty. I know it has worked great on other trucks. I have seen it in action. I'm just posting so maybe someone has the answer.

I am going to take the Smarty off and reload the bully dog program and see if I have any timing issues...

I have made several phone calls and about half of them agree that they get timing rattle with the Smarty on even numbers. Hopefully Bob or Marco can chime in.

Also, The smoke is INSANE! Oo. :D

well how is the power vs the bully dog?

It's too close to call. I'll have to get it on the track.

smarty only vs. bully dog only = close call

smarty/tst(with what I can use, pretty much 1x1) VS bully dog/tst7x5... ... Seat of the pants I think the bullydog/tst wins that, but still the track won't lie... .

I don't run alot of power though my truck like alot of you guys do, But I'm always changing programing around. The very first release of the Smarty worked great with the TST, but was VERY smokey. I liked to run Smarty on 2 and increase power on the fly with the TST. Even on level 2 it got the truck moving and making boost quickly so that the TST could produce it's upper rpm power. Then I tried the first release for improved throttle contol for the Smarty, software 202. Smoke and thottle reponse was improved, but I could no longer use the TST even with the Smarty on even numbered software. It would make lots of timing rattle. Then I tried Smarty's "TST" software based on the 202 software. They would now work together but I found the decreased throttle response became a little boring. The other day I downloaded the latest 303 program=least amount of TQ management. By itself it is definetly more refined than the first version, I like it. But it still will not work with the TST. I set the Smarty to level 2, TST 4x1, and I get some nasty rattle at 12-15psi @ 2000-2200rpm but it seems to go away at higher boost levels in the same rpm range. I think if I had the $$$$$$$$ right now I would like to try TST's latest version of the PowerMax with rail pressure by itself.

Luken are you running studs or not????? I've never had a timing rattle with my tst and bullydog stack I was thinking about buying a smarty to try out on the track but now I think I'll get the PPE instead and try it.

Chris,

I didn't have studs the first time it blew. THe second time it blew because something was not right. It blew 700 miles after it was put back together and I wasn't even running the Crazy Larry. I think the guy who put the head back on screwed up... This time I did the work with the help of another member and it is doing great!

After this test I'm not real confident that the bully dog does as much timing as people say it does. I can assure you that if I ran the smarty on 8 and the tst on 7x5 like I do with the bully dog, it would blow the head off :D

I figured you didn't just because of the hp numbers you posted.

but ya never know, some guys get like 100 hp just from an air filter :--) ;)

have you ever checked your drive pressure??

what are your egt's at that hp?

Never checked drive pressures... I just got a second gauge to hook it up. If I wasn't working today thats what I would be doing...

Egts are warm... In the hot summer time at the dragstrip I could hit 1600. With the smarty it is running a little cooler on the top end but I would guess it's becuase I can't do very much extra fueling from the tst.

Heck I dunno... :D If I can't get it to work I'll just stick to my bully dog...

Lucas,

Do you have the adjustable timing on the TST?

Have you tried this Smarty program?

Smt3V307D302B. zip

I have a little timing rattle but not bad and I can adjust it out with the timing adjustment of the TST. It's working very well with the TST.

I also tried this Smarty program:

Smt3e_306_502. smt

If I remember right, the title was wrong and the actual program was Smt3E_306_302. smt not 502. I really like this program and it worked great with the TST, however the mileage sucked! I thing Marco had adjusted the timing way back on this program. He told me to try the Smt3V307D202B but the lowend wasn't like I wanted so I went to the Smt3V307D302B and like I said above it has been working real well. Haven't had a chance to check MPG yet.

BIG BOB,

No I don't have the adjustable timing on my tst yet. I didn't need it with the bully dog program so I could never justify spending more money on it :D

I can't try new programs because the Smarty belongs to another guy.

I was just trying it out for a while to see how it works compared to my bully dog program.

I just don't understand why a guy would need adjustable timing to work with a downloader that does no timing:confused:

Thanks!

Lucas

I have also noticed that there is timing advance with the Smarty when there isn't suppose to be, example level 4, 6 & 8. But again with the TST timing adjustment, I have the opportunity to make it right.

Thanks for the help! I'll see what I can do about getting the adjustable timing on my tst. Even if I still use my bully dog I could possible find a better stacking combo.

It's obvious that the odd numbers do ALOT of timing but I agree that the even numbers are doing quite a bit as well.

Another newbie question

How is it possible to make the same HP without added timing? Maybe it's Marcos secret;)

I also have the Triple Dog and when I first got the Smarty, it would not even come close to the TD, however with the latest tunes Marco has released, it is stronger than the TD, at least on my truck.

That is one thing that I must state, I have a lot of confidence in Marco, that is why I bought the Smarty, I knew Marco would listen to us and continue to improve it to meet our needs.

IF you get a chance to try a Smarty with the latest software, I think you will see a big difference from the first ones, timing rattle was terrible.

I run the Smt3V307D302B. zip software in the Smarty and the TST set on Auto timing and it's been working very well.

only marco knows for sure since he is the author.

Marco is away on vacation but I will see him Tuesday.

If you can, please get us some answers! For sure about how much timing is added on even numbers.

I'd sure like to see what this stack would produce if a guy could crank the tst.

UPDATE:

I just talked to the owner of the Smarty and he said I can download whatever version I need to since this isn't getting it done.

Bob, can you tell me what download I need to try?
