Smarty vs stock 48RE life span

Talked about the smarty with my better half and her response was I think buy it, at least that is what my hearing interpreted . Main concern is with the Smarty's modification/elimination of the torque management programming how long will the drivetrain handle this? On my 96 the trans did not last very long after turning up the power on the engine, even after a BD converter, heavy duty clutches, and valve body mods. I know the 48RE is a different better unit than the 47RH and after my 30,000 trans fluid change and pan upgrade I can say the 48RE had virtually no debris in the pan even after overheating the trans backing up loaded dump trailer (11,000+ Lbs). At 25,000 miles the 96 CTD had a lot of crud in the pan.

I attribute most of this to the torque management software and fear that its elimination will send the trans to the next upgrade list in a hurry.



Any feedback is appreciated as I am looking at improving my mpg and getting rid of the slug like pedal feel and acceleration.

I have the smarty set on sw1 30hp and my edge on zero and my transmission slips pretty bad. I know thats my next upgrade a new transmission.

I would think the Smarty would be tough on a transmission if it truly produces a great deal of low end torque. Torque is what is hard on the transmission, and if it comes on real strong at low rpm where line pressures are low, the t/c clutch is more prone to slipping. At least that makes sense to me, but I am no expert.

I'd like to know how hard the Smarty is on a built 48re. The high torque at low line pressure could be an issue with any transmission. There was a post a while back on the DTR, I think, about a guy that used some programer that disabled the torque mangement (not a Smarty) and it totally destroyed a fully built ATS 48re. This and low boost smoke are my concerns about the Smarty.

I do not believe your stock transmission will last very long, I just now have 1000 miles on my built transmission and after running on sw#7 and then stopping at a traffic signal I could smell burnt clutches... and or brakes. There was a semi beside me and I am praying it was his rig, never the less it has me a bit concerned. I am changing my transmission fluid this weekend(1000 mi. per DTT) and will inspect very thoroughly. Will post if I find any evidence of burnt fluid, etc. .
