Hi there Cumminzpowr,

The smoke adjustment screw (if i understand your question right) is under the little round cap cover on top of the pump diaghram. If you turn that torqz (sp?) screw clockwise it will increase your snap throttle fuel and smoke. I've heard it referred to as 'the first 30 feet of launch adjustment' too. In my case I have found that as little as a 1/3 turn starts to make a difference. You'll have to note its orig. position and go from there. I found also that the star wheel adjustment is pretty touchy when it comes to making smoke provided the afc diaghram is adjusted up in conjunction. Piers can probly give you a rocket science answer better than mine. BTW why do you want to make lottsa smoke? My experience here has taught me that the pump is something to be respected and needs to be adjusted with care and purpose. Just curious is all. Piers, correct me if i'm wrong please and maybe comment on the resulting carboning up of components perhaps.

So on the AFC cap you just pry it off or do you take the screws out. I assume you turn it the same way on all the VE pumps, clockwise for more fuel with less boost. I have a friend with a VE pump on another truck and it needs the proper adjustment. What's the best way to get the metal band off of the power screw?

Right, clockwise is more, counterclockwise is less on all the adjustments on the VE (I'm pretty sure) The best way to get that metal colar off the power screw is to take the screw the whole way out and put it in a vise. Make sure to not loose your original position though!

Well that sounds easy enough, I'd just always been afraid of taking it all the way out. Is it the consensus that the cone shaped thing under the diaphram should be adjusted before messing with the power screw?
