I told a friend I'd post this for him. He has a '95 2500, automatic, 4X4.
I notice when i start my truck for the first time cold, i see what apears to be smoke and the engine runs a little rough for about 15-25 seconds then it smoths out. after it warms up i never see this again. Wonder whats going on here?
He said it was white smoke. Any thoughts guys.

It could very likely be the overflow valve. I've changed several this week and it cured the symtoms you describe.

Look in a post 1-2 mos. ago for the Bosch part number posted to "dowg"

Could also be malfunctioning grid heater etc. ,

What's the fuel psi after the filter?

Good luck,

Andy

my truck does the same thing!!! I just thought it was woreout or somthing and when it heated up it sealed o. k. . Only got 90,000 on it hardly any towing. ide like the number to that part. I couldnt find it in the threads..... RRR

The white smoke is normal, it is caused by cold combustion chamber. Not able to burn all of the fuel. Retarded timming also plays a part in this i think. That is what i have been told. Mine is a 95 auto and it fogs the dogs every morning is it don't let it run for a bit.

The new Cummins part number for the overflow valve is: 3932096.

Thanks for chiming in Dowg.

Here's the bosch number if that's better for you. 2 417 413 093. Do not buy one that ends in 086, the above is the new and improved unit. Whether you buy the part from Cummins or DC it will have the bosch number stamped on the side.

The reason for not wanting the part ending in 086 is a Bosch TSB recommending the new and improved part.

BTW the 093 has two shims inside vs one shim like the part number ending in 086. It should help improve spring tension and have a longer life.

My 1995 is on # 3 overflow valve, number 2 was tinkered with to improve its life which actually lead to a premature demise! #ad

Hi Randy. How are you doing down there.
My truck was acting like that... sort of.
It was my fuel return line. I dont know exactly why, my guess is it let air sneak back into the pump over night.
It only acted this way for the first start of the day.
I first replaced my rubber hose, then found that the fuel leak kept returning. It was barely noticable, but enough to make it run rough in the morning.
Have your friend look for a fuel leak. It wont have to be very big to do this.

Randy,
See my reply to FourBaR's post.
Sounds like fuel return line problem.
Good luck.
