Installed the BullyDog Stage 2 plate & performance is great. I havn't adjusted the star wheel yet & am getting a pretty heavy stream of black smoke at low speed & punching the pedal. How much smoke is OK?

Bill's right- having grown up in HB I can tell you the police are notorius for picking on modified vehicles of any kind. Just remember that black smoke is also unburnt fuel;) ... ... ... .

Contact your vendor, or read the archives, for info on AFC adjustments. Basically, remove the plug with a 5/16" or 8mm allen wrench (it will be tight) and turn the top of the star wheel away from the engine several clicks at a time. First time you will probably go about 10 clicks and then fine tune with fewer clicks. Don't lose the aluminum washer under the plug--it will probably stay on the afc housing from the paint.

Large quantities of black smoke make a good argument for the greenies to legislate further damage to the diesels. Do you really want the 04s to have egr? Some day you might want to buy one. The smoke does not help power at the level you are using anyway. Smoke at full power and 500+ hp may be hard to avoid, but that is a different situation.

burn that fuel

Put a PDR HX35 in that bad boy and burn that fuel!Oo. You're gonna get some of that sweet black smoke if you really step into it, but that's life! If California is a problem, move like all the other sensible people!:D

I still remember when he did it. . It was 10-26-02. . I am partying in Bastrop Tx, and I get this call from Greg, and it goes something like this:

"Hello?"

"Hey man, its greg! You aint gonna believe this sh**!!"

"uh oh... what now?!"

"Well, I won a burnout competition tonight!"

"Cool. . "

"Now my truck wont start for some reason. "

"Really"

"Yeah, I did a burnout for like almost 2 mins, and my pyro stopped at 2000°"

"HOLY SH**!!!!"

"Yeah, now my motor wont start, and when I shut the truck off, my turbo and manifold was glowing bright orange!":--)

It was then that I was at a loss for words. I got my 191's from Greg, and he wanted to sell me his laser cut DV's, and I told him no, that I already have fogged the north side of San Antonio, and that the West nile virus had no chance of making it here so long as I was around!:D But yes... Those of you who do not know Greg, Take our word! He is the one responsible for giving me the BOMBing bug back in February of this year and look at all the goodies I have now!

i guess not;) i had the rack stop out too, and the smoke was good, but i didn't take the afc spring out (i could still cover a car entirely with smoke). i do know others who smoke quite severly. smoke=good.

Only thing that hasn't been mentioned is the plugging of the Cat. Converter from all the soot. If you're going to enjoy sending smoke signals, you might consider gutting the cat so when Mr. Man eyeballs your exhaust system after pulling you over for West Nile Virus eradication, he'll see a lump where the cat is supposed to be.

The other Greg.

Smoke Adjusted

Well, I backed off the star wheel about 40 clicks & now I don't see the heavy smoke in the mirror. Kind of miss it though. Pretty cool to watch the trailing vehicles back off in a little cloud of smoke. The Enviro guys are probably happy though. No Cat on this Oregon truck so maybe a little adjustment the other way is in order.

98 Rammer:

I had the luck, the same luck an auto guy gets at a rally when he wins a free SB clutch for his truck... the grand prize was an edge box, and I just so happened to win it! What are the odds??

For everyone else..... I turned the starwheel 7 clicks the good way to **** the greenies off... . the only problem I have had this week, is that that square junction piece that holds the soft hose from the manifold that goes into the back of the AFC housing, and also has a place for the boost elbow will not stay in the damn thing! I think the threads are stripped. . I epoxied the thing right now, as there are just enough threads to hold it in there, but only hand tight... after that, its no bueno. hit one hard bump under WOT, and it pops off..... that sux!!! Anyway, so I am going to try the Epoxy trick... hopefully it will work! Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated... . and for the star wheel adjustment, how many clicks is it ok to do... . does this just affect low end smoke, or is it all around smoke??

AFC Adjustment

I had guys suggest to start with 20 clicks away from the motor to adjust the smoke. I tried 20 & sitting in the shop & accelerating, still had considerable smoke. End up going about 40 clicks & reduced the smoke substantially. Test drove & could see no smoke under acceleration. I think I had to go that far because I did not get the AFC housing back in the original location & that's my theory of why I had to go so far. I'm now thinking of reducing the 40 clicks to something less but everything seems to be running well.
