My '92 W250 has started smoking. It's not the black smoke you see when some guy stomps on a bombed diesel. This is lighter in color, and starts as soon as I fire it up. Am I screwed?

Read BushWakr's- RIP - FAQ

He said advance the pump timing. How do you do that (other than by driving into a mechanic's joint, if possible)?

The injection pump will rotate and change the timing. Rotate the top of the pump towards the head will advance timing, rotate away will decrease the advance.

There are 3 bolts that hold the VE pump onto the housing. You will find them on the firewall side of the timing cover spaced around the pump. The top and outboard ones are easy, the third is on the engine side of the pump and kind of hidden up there. Either bend up a wrench to fit in there or remove the power steering/vacuum pump asembly for a better view.

Remember to slightly loosen the injector lines on the pump alos or they don't turn well. That should get ya started. :)

Is the smoke issue brand new, or has it been coming on a while? If the latter, I'd suspect injector wear, and a clean and reset/ rebuild should fix it.

If it's only when cold, I'd suspect a KSB malfunction, or more properly, a sensor malfunction in the KSB system.

How old are your fuel and air filters?

Sorry I disappeared

Thank you very much for the responses. The next day, a Sunday, I had a horse wreck, and I have been house-bound and on crutches. I won't bore you with the details, but the horse went head-first into a bank with my foot cushioning his fall (attempt at humor). I was heading north and my toes suddenly headed east-southeast. :{ What little good news there is = I have had time to look at my shop book and figure out what you guys were suggesting. ASA I can motor, I am going out there and start with the easiest fix attempt - changing filters.

Thanks again, and I will report success or failure.

I swear some gyys will do darned near anything to get out of advancing their timing:-laf

Sorry to hear of your misfortune... hope it heals in a "timely" manner

Those are my poor attempts at humor.

If you can't dodge it Ram it only applies when driving your dodge not riding your horse. Our mare just foaled yesterday. Nice little filly. I hope you recover well. My truck smokes a fair bit on start up too. I think it has a few issues like maybe some poorer compression due to some scoring. Doesn't seem to use excessive oil or start hard. Runs better than most old fords or chevies that were rode hard and put away wet.

It's best to be able to use a large set of channel-type locking pliers. Loosen all the hardware that holds said pump in place and use them bigum pliers to grab the top front screw head on the pump top cover and another screw head on the front corner of the intake cover.

Squeeze. (move pump towards the intake cover)

Lock the pump in desired location with the free hand/wrench and it will stay in plce long enough to tighten down all the hardware.

Don't break off a pump flange ear. You can get them too tight.
