Will a match ignite diesel?

Passed by a D-Max

I just installed my 5" stacks this past week, and I love to throw smoke on an occassion :D I've noticed on different videos that some guys can start rolling smoke out their stacks before they start moving (espically on burnouts). I know it has some to do with building boost pressure, but how much boost will it take to get this effect? I have the tst(twins program) and edge ez stacked, so the ability to throw smoke isn't a problem, but I would like to do it sometime while sitting at a stop light or just fooling around. I have an auto, so I don't know how much harder it would be to do this. I've already had alot of looks & complements on the stacks, now I want show how well they smoke. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

CBrabec,

that shouldn't be hard to do. hold the brake pedal and ease into the throttle. if your trans is stock you need to be careful here, you can break stuff when you boost launch. i never tried it with a stock trans or shafts, but i would say 5-8 psi should get a little smoke rolling without major driveline stress... ... ... . and, as always, my opinion and a $1 will get you a cup of coffee ;)

DBraunig, thanks for the advise. I am planning on getting my complete DTT trans done in march, so off the line with high boost won't hurt a thing with this transmission. I wonder how much boost I can create before the tires break loose? I will wait to have some serious fun after that BIG mod is done.

master1578, now I understand the first post. I read the other thread you provided and I understand the different views people have on smoke. I agree that doing it all the time will p*** people off, and with my business name on the doors of my truck, I don't want to give people the wrong impression of myself or my business. On the other hand, having some fun and hot rodding everyonce in a while isn't going to hurt anything or anyone. I can't afford a muscle car, so my truck is my muscle and work machine.

Brandon, yea I know your truck can throw a cloud of smoke quicker than mine. I hope it can do the same once we slam that sps 62 in. And once John is done with our transmissions, LOOK OUT! Time to slam it and "Let the coal roll!!!"

Don't get the wrong idea, I enjoy the smoke too... :D

When I saw your post I was expecting responses similar to the other thread. Thus the "can of worms"... LOL

ps I'm with you on the "MUSCLE TRUCK" thing...

I tpoo have an outo and don't see much smoke. I don't have a locking TC and cannot load the engine enough to such more than a puff in normal driving conditions. I have no afc function and internal pump mods as well as a piston lift pump and POD injectors.

If I want to see some smoke I have to push the brake peddle down and roll into the throttle. The combintaion of rear brake lfriction and the spinning rear tires create enough of a load to blow black smoke. I do this at intersections time to time.

Another method I have developed is to drive along at 15/20 mph and hammer the throttle while riding the brakes. It will leave a road nearly obscured. However, I have to replace the rear brakes and tires often.

A friend's turck has a manual transmission along with the same engine mods that I installed and his truck will throw smoke on demand simply by upshifting and planting the go peddle. We don't have that option.

I attended the last Diesel Nationals and never seen so many trucks blowing black smoke. I guess it's cool and all but it gives the general public a bad taste of diesels in general. Personally, I don't care. But I don't have a truck that will smoke unless told to do so. Some of the trucks over at the Indi truck show would smoke BLACK all the time. They must have no turbo or simply removed the boost hose to the intake. One turck was in front of me and I could not see where I was going. No lie.

I say do what you want. If I had a truck that would smoke like a freight train, I'd be taking advantage of it time to time when the opportunity presents its self. As it stands now, niether of my trucks will smoke with out inflicting undue wear and tear.

come on guys I'm sure those are jut the post installation pics, without any miles... give us first genners some credit!!!

the third gens won't fuel until the computer sees boost, so there will be little to no smoke until the turbo is going. Even the TST with the twins program has to see boost before it adds additional fuel(very quickly). Someone on here modded his TST to fuel instantly even if there is no boost. He was saying he couldn't turn TE up past level 1 and it smokes bad if you just looked @ the throttle.

Scrappy, that mode with the tst is true. I know the trick and it's true that with the blip of the throttle, smoke will come out. More on higher settings, but clears up when the turbo hits about 10-15 psi.

Huh?????

What in blazes is the TST "Twins Program" LOL

It sounds like you guys are watching a TV shown on the Public Broadcasting Network.

I think I recall that show. Wasn't it called "Full House"?

Boost is exactly what you don't want. Smoke comes from lots of fuel but little air. All those rigs smoke because they're fueling like heck before the have enough boost to clean it up. Some are fueling more than their turbo can ever clean up.
