I hear alot about turning the star wheel for more smoke, and in my "searching" the forums (done that !) I found "... turn the star wheel towards the engine. " Excuse me for not getting wich way "toward the engine" is but here is what I want to know...

Applying the formula: (R)Righty = Tighty / (L)Lefty = Loosy

L(3. 14)x=C or R(3. 14)x=C

Will the clicks be making the spring more tight or more loose?

From what I gather I would turn the wheel towards the top of the hole(8mm plug). But on the other hand in my mind it would seem best to tighten the spring if a 3k spring kit is desirable.

Anyone have a "Marine" proof explanation ??

The AFC spring and the 3K springs are two completely different animals. The AFC spring is located in the AFC housing on top of the pump. If you want more smoke, leaning over the drivers side fender, push the top of the starwheel towards the engine. All the way forward, the starwheel will almost disappear into the housing toward the front of the engine. This is where the AFC spring is the loosest, allowing quicker fueling, hence more smoke. The governor springs are located farther down inside the pump. You won't see them by messing with the star wheel. The 3K springs replace the factory governor springs. I hope this helps.

Yes, Gotcha. I see the reason now. Loose spring / quicker fueling.

Okay so the gsk is different. Still learning but I'm like a sponge when it comes to reading about these thread topics.

I appreciate your knowledge on this subject.

Can you turn this star wheel too far? Or is there a certain amount it should be turned. Does this effect egt's? I don't have any guages (yet).

This is my first diesel truck. I've only had it two weeks but absolutely love it.

The star wheel will stop when it goes all the way forward. I can't tell you about EGT's. I did mine as I was doing the GSK and cam plate upgrades, so my EGT's went way up anyway. It probably won't affect a stock truck, too much, but if you're planning on BOMBing the truck at some point, gauges should be the first item on the list.
