I was out tonight running errands and stomped on it pretty hard getting on the highway. This was the first time in awhile that I really gave it lots of throttle. I noticed in my rear-view mirror I left a bit of a smoke trail (I could tell from the guy's headlights behind me) as I got into the high RPM range (>2300). So, I continued to flog it for the remainder of the drive, and the quantity of smoke decreased, until I could only make a short puff when I gave >50% throttle starting from a low RPM (say 1500-1600).

So I was thinking, maybe since I hadn't wound it up in awhile a layer of soot had built up in the exhaust piping, and the high airflow with hard acceleration blew it out?

Has anyone else out there experienced anything similar?

rbattelle,

I noticed exactly the same too - more so driving around in town than on the highway. I also have a little soot patch on the right rear quarter panel and bumper. The bumper kind of also has a "gun blue" tint to it depending on how the light shines on it.

I too have the blue tint. That's from heat. Occassionally I have a little mark of soot, but it always wipes off. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who sees smoke sometimes. I think it's perfectly normal, I just never saw anyone mention it on here.

It is my understanding (VERY VERY limited understanding), that the smoke we see is caused by unburned fuel. All diesels smoke a little, and it seems that they smoke the most when the engine is really generating boost and making power. I'd do some searching in the 2nd gen side and see what they say. I know it's WAY normal, and nothing to be concerned about.

Most of my buds that I've met in my area from the TDR are smoke crazy! To hear them tell it, "if you ain't smokin, you ain't doin somethin right. "

I used to hate the smoke, and stacks and all that jazz, but it's growing on me.

Take care!

Andy

Same here..... particularly if the engine isn't fully warmed up. My 01. 5 would smoke some when I got on it, but nothing like this baby does. The first time I noticed it I was just getting off nightworks and getting on the expressway ramp with somebody right on my butt. I kicked her fairly hard and looked in the mirror and could barely see their headlights... . and they also backed off quite a bit. I laughed all the way home!! :)

Yes, it's true smoke is generally cause by unburned diesel. I fully expect most diesels to do it. I was just making sure it was something others were seeing on the new HPCR setup, which has significantly reduced the smoking tendency.
