well I have 26,000 miles on my truck and I smoked my converter. I am waiting to see if Chrysler is going to replace the transmission or rebuild. Does anybody know what I should day to get the whole transmission replaced. The tech said if transmission is less than 70 percent damaged, they will repair the transmission. What can I say to get the transmission replace with a new one.

Replacement transmission

I don't have experience with DC, but when the transmission in my POS Furd went out under warranty, they replaced it with a remanufactured one, stating they NEVER put a new one in...

They wont tear into it. They will replace it with a rebuilt, it is much more cost effective for them. They should also be replacing the radiator and transmission lines to avoid contamination of the new trans.

On the bright side, even though it is downtime, if they do it wrong, they will be doing it again because your warranty is good until 70k miles. When the trans went out of my '03 QC at 67k miles they put in a rebuilt and wanted to charge me $1300 for a new radiator and cooler lines. I think it took one phone call to clear that up... I paid the $100 deductible.

Who determines the 70% figure & how do they arrive at that decision :confused:

What happens is that a tech tears it apart looks and see what parts are bad and need to be replaced. IF all the parts cost and labor are more that 70% of the total value of the transmission then the transmission gets replaced.

But before you do all that you have to explain to star what happened and why it needs to be replaced That is a PITA :-{}

IF the truck is under warranty and I was working on it, I would NEVER even think about rebuilding the transmission. I would tell star that a bunch of stuff was wrong with and and tell them taht the transmission needs to be replaced. Its easier for everybody that way. Its DC's transmission let then honor their warranty with a new unit not the same one with a few new parts.

Now WHY would the radiator and cooler lines need to be replaced with a transmission change??? :confused: :confused:

I would RUN, not walk, away from any dealer or shop that suggested that! They might try to put an Allison or TQ Shift in there!!! :(

First of all you can't really kink the replacement. They have to return the old trans for teardown/evaluation and if there is nothing wrong that warranted replacement, they charge the dealer back.

DC pays the dealer to flush the cooler and lines. The flush machine has a pressure gauge on it, and if the pressure drop is too great the cooler and or radiator are replaced. Many DC reman units are failed because the installer did not flush the cooler properly. Any time the converter or clutches burn up it is very important to flush.

My experience exactly. I recall the back pressure in the cooler was above spec and that was the reason for replacement. You definately do not want to bolt up a fresh trans and pump a bunch of metal shavings through it that were left over from the fried unit.
