Pulled off the highway last night after all day haulin and had smoke sizzling out of a little black box on the inside fender wall of my 91 Dodge RAM 250 1st gen 5. 9 CTD w/ AT. Also found the battery boiled dry, probably shorted, and smokin as well. Not Good! Any thoughts on what happened - runaway alternator? And now where do I find a new engine controller?:{

Dealer should still be able to get them. I have gotten them from Schucks Automotive and they are available online in different places. All a matter of price I would guess. :)

search the posts in the 1st gen section, there is an extensive write up about the ECM, and were do get it. i had to replace mine over a year ago. ive commented in multiple threads about where to get it and the exact price.

Thanks All for the tips on locating new... I've tracked down several sources.
My questions still remain: what caused my battery to boil dry, and the EC to burn up? What else should I be looking into as I replace the bat & EC?:confused:

You can basically bypass it. Mount an external regulator, use aftermarket cruise (Rostra electric servo), use a manual switch for grid heater and O/D.

The battery could have been the cause of it all, or not. Put in a good battery, check all your grounds and connections, check the harness for possible chafing and bare wires, change your voltage regulator, start it up and test for overcharge or other issues. Unless you can find something obvious thats about all you can do. Good luck. :)

If you go onto ebay and type in "1991 dodge diesel" scroll to items for sale in the store there will be an ECM on there for sale
