X-Monitor question

Hey guys, I juat traded in my 99 24 valve on a 05 2500. It has the six speed, and the 610 cummins. The power of this truck is unbelievable. Now for my question, when i mash the go pedal, like when getting on the highway, a steady trail of black smokes comes out the tailpipe, kinda like when you put bigger injectors on. My 99 never did that, is this normal for the 610's. Also, it seems like i have little surges in power, any info would be helpfull... thanks in advance

04.5 does the same

My truck does the same thing. Just a little more fuel being pushed in then what it seems to be able to burn. It seems that if I do it a few times in a row it isn't so bad. If you go a while with out really getting on it you can really smoke out the person behind you. Kind of fun! :-laf

First off ,

Congrats on the new truck .

I too went from a 99 to a 05 w/ a 6 speed and love the overall seat o' pants feel when you get on the gas pedal. Mine does blow some black smoke when under hard acceleration . Don't worry , enjoy . Oo.

Yep, mash the pedal at low revs and fumigate the traffic behind. I'm sure the soot trap (aka, Cat Converter) doesn't help. It sure seems to me like Cummins/Dodge has provided a little buit-in delay when going from low-revs or idle to a WOT (or simillar) throttle position in order to protect the drive train components. It's a real eye opener on wet pavement, especially at the start/finish of rain. I've had the thing sideways pulling out from a stop because of it, and I almost had the thing sideways on the highway trying to pass in the same conditions. You go from what seems like no torque to all 600lb/ft in a just a few milliseconds. Just my $0. 02.

sounds like the engine isn't getting enough air, or the cat is restrictive enough so there isn't as much of a pressure drop across the turbine to get it to spool up properly...

sounds like an air intake of some sort is mod #1 [bhaf, or something else?]

and a exhaust cat "test" pipe to see if that is the problem mod #2 ;)

2004. 5 does it also. If ya like the smoke try the Bully dog down loader. It will smoke like mad when you first step on in, but the performance is great. The funny thing about it is even with all that smoke, the fuel mileage is better.

thanks

Hey, thanks guys. The smoke trail looks awsome when I mash it, and I'm still getting 20mpg. This truck is awsome, pics are to come. Thnaks again

My buddy has a brand-new '05 CTD 3500 with the 48RE and it does the same thing. There's that little delay when you hit it from idle or low revs. First time he hit the pedal coming out of a stop sign to beat traffic in the dry, he had the thing sideways as the sudden hit of what seems like all 610lb/ft came in at once. Don't know if it's turbo lag or if it's built-in transmission protection.

I know the torque is dialed back in the lower gears with the 325 hp manual transmission. I would figure they are doing the same thing with the auto. Do you have a boost gauge? You may be building boost also. With the 4. 5 and newer trucks it must take longer to build boost ~ 30+ psi, compared to an 305hp that sees ~20+ psi. I have never driven 305 hp, 325 hp trucks back to back with boost gauges.

I have a DiPricol 0-35psi guage. It doesn't seem to make any boost for that split-second when you hit it at low revs. Then the gauge goes to the moon and you get full boost. I just don't know if it's momentary turbo lag or deliberate de-fueling. I haven't towed or hauled heavy in the year I've had it (28kmi so far), but I've seen the guage north of 30psi plenty of times.
