Dealer said the white smoke at start up "and it's a crazy amount of smoke" is probabally from not putting the truck under enough load, like towing etc. They told me DC informed them that it's dirty injectors burning off at start up. I had the latest flash or TSB done a while ago for the 04. 5's, not smoking then, and now the truck smokes at start up and smokes for a mile or so "like a crop duster". It even happens when temps are up to 65 or 70. Any help is appreciated here. I don't tow anything but have a heavy foot.

Smoke

Newman: Not sure what the answer might be, but I'm a little curious myself. Especially since I just got back from an 8k roadtrip and have only just noticed the white smoke at start ups on this trip. I was pulling a single vehicle hauler empty one way and loaded with a vehicle the other. Never saw the smoke prior to my trip, I have a little over 43k on my truck.

Maybe the experts can offer their advice.

Leaking Injector fills piston bowl with fuel when motor is off (leaking off common rail pressure). The longer the startup smoke lasts the more likely it is from the leak down of a bad injector. I'm wonder why Bosch didn't dump rail pressure at shutdown to avoid this issue.

Mine started the white smoke on cold starts about 7500 miles. No smoke of any kind before that. It was a leaking injector. Dealer diagnosed injector leaking and replaced #6 injector. The white smoke on cold start up went away.

Might try running additive for a tank or two and see if it helps. I use PS Kleen and MMO in every tank now. Dont know if it helps or not, but it sure cant hurt. Should help keep injectors clean and add lubrictation to the fuel. I mix 2 parts PS to 1 part MMO, add 16oz of mix to every tank.

I would find a new dealer if at all possible. I would not continue to frequent a place that LIES to you like that. It is absurd to suggest the injectors on your year old truck are dirty because you haven't towed with it. It is an outright lie that some DC tech told them that as well. "Dirty injectors burning off" burning off what????? DDahl hit the nail on the head, you are burning off the fuel that has leaked into the cylinder(s) through a BAD INJECTOR.

Now you either take it back to the dealer that is giving you the run around and INSIST they do an injector test, or take it to someplace with a better reputation and honest service people and ask them to do the test. The bummer is DC wont allow dealers to stock the injectors. Do not let them tell you two weeks to get the parts either. They can and should overnight the parts. Expect to be without the truck for two days.

I had a bad one, #3, and took it in, told them I had a bad injector. The service writers asked me how I knew and doubted I was right. I WAS right, they don't question me anymore. I think I now have a second one going. It isn't as bad as yours yet. Get it fixed, it could ruin the entire engine.

really? Mine doesn't smoke on every startup and does so mostly when cold. If it was a bad injector leaking, what would it do to ruin the whole motor? Would crappy mpg be any indication of this also? I don't want to sound like I'm questioning you, I'm just not that familiar w/ the CTD yet.

I know on every post I seem to put up, I'm asking if my CTD is screwed up, and it might very well not be, but I am around other Diesels every day and I had some expectations going into buying this CTD. Poor MPG, white smoke on startup, and sounding rough after reflash, were not some of them.

if i might add somthing here, i dont have a new truck but ive owned several semis and in them and my dodge i always run howes lubericant in ever tank, never had any prablems. not sure if this will help but it is good for the truck and it helps out the injectores. just to let you guyes with newer trucks know i was in m dealer and they had a row of dirty common rails along the shop wall and the service man said they were all(4) junk because of bad injectores, and they r having a hard time keeping up with these problems.
