Smokin' my clutch? Help!

When backing our 9,000 lb travel trailer into our driveway (which is elevated from the street, creating a hill) I have resorted to reverse in 4 wheel drive high. Use the clutch less that way.



BUT - a couple of times now, when finally parked, we've noticed an odor like hot brakes. Is this the clutch? Do they get 'glazed' like brake shoes do?



It drives ok. No slippage that I can tell. Should I start shopping for a new clutch or am I being a worry wart?

Four wheel drive HIGH? Four-low is easier on the clutch than four-high.



A slipping clutch will smell like hot brakes.

There was a post some place on how to rig your transfer case up so it would only go into 2 wheel drive lo. This would probably be the best for your problem. Hope this helps.

Smoked Clutch

I smoked my first clutch doin' the same thing. Installed a BD 2LOW kit and eliminated the problem

There are a number of units available that would allow you to back up in low range without having the front axle in 4wheel. The one I have came from a TDR member. Bob Verhoef, Also BD has them as well as other units. I would never, never go back to trying to back up a trailer with a 3:54 and not be in low range. IMO
