Hey yall



Got another question I need help with. I got this '93 Dodge CTD,that I bought Wednesday. I haven't been able to drive it a ton but have been able to some. It's a really nice truck,drives like a dream etc etc and I love just looking at it BUT I don't know much about the CTDs. Friday I was going somewhere and it wouldn't start,cause I was a dumbass and pulled a few wires underneath the truck,accidently pulling the neutral safety switch out enough to where it wouldn't engage the starter. My Dad messed with it,cutting the switch on and off a good many times,and I'm afraid it kept sending fuel to the motor with him shutting it on and off that many times. We got it fixed and to running again. . but NOW the truck puffs just a really small blue/white smoke at start-up. Doesn't do it any other time than that though



What's the problem here? I looked for oil leaks,fuel leaks etc etc and this truck doesn't leak a drop of fluid except a little on the rear main oil seal. Why's it smoking that little now?





Another question-I thought the truck had been "turned up" and yall said to check and see if the "tamper cap" was gone off the pump and it is,just the set screw shining. It'll blow black smoke and smoke all four tires in a few gears so it has to be. The only thing is... it is eating up my tires!! It has brand new tires on it too. I love having that power and all but like coming up the mountain,if I have to get on it a little it'll bark the tires,if I get on it from a start off,not goosing it just regular pressure,sometimes it'll still smoke the tires! Now I know this will get me into trouble with the cops,and it isn't good at all for these expensive tires AND I'm betting its not good on the truck all-a-round. How can I cure this problem? I'm going to be buying a trans temp,boost gauge,AND most important a pyrometer and get the Turbo Cool-Down Timer from Howard. I'm going to straight pipe it,build the Old Smokey Mount for it with a BHAF now I can stand it being "turned up" some but not to the point to where it smokes the tires all the time I know I can turn it back down but I know if I go to far or whatever I can mess it up more than helping it because I have not had the experience with these trucks.



Sorry for writing a story but could yall help me with these,I'm new to all this,I love my truck but I'm afraid I'm going to hurt it and lessen the life span of this truck,and I want it to last me a really long time so please help me out a dumb 17 yr old

I'm pretty impressed its "smoking" the dually tires with the auto.



Are the rears pumped up to 80psi? Let some out if you run around empty mostly. If they are pumped up hard for towing, then empty there will not be much grip. I run my mud tires at 35 psi in the rear to get them to wear even. Yes the cummins eats tires.



Are you taking off like you are driving a gasser? Lot more throttle input the necessary to get the diesel moving. I find getting out of the wifes durango and into the diesel the diesel needs less input from the go pedal to get going.



Is it actually spinning all four tires or is it an open rear just spinning the right rear? If this is the case get a limited slip and then alot of the problem will be solved.



Just get in the truck and drive. Driving the diesel is differnt then anything else.

I checked the front tire pressure,on the rear tires I can't hardly get the gauge on the stem cause of the simulators The front tires are pumped up to 60psi. They are a 32" MT tire... one guy on another site said I probably just needed to recalibrate my right foot cause I've always only drive gas guzzlers,said because I wasn't used to the turbo lag and I was goosing on it pretty hard not really knowing it.



But if you don't believe me on it smoking all four tires... I left four 20 ft long at least black marks on a road this morning after it rained. . not meaning to of course. If it wasn't so far back to where I was. . I'd go take a picture of them to prove it I'll get all this diesel stuff figured out one of these years. Thanks for the advice

If you can spin all four tires, then the first thing you better get on the truck is some gauges especially the pyro. With that much power on a good hill there is a good chance that the egt's will probably be in the 1300º range and you DO NOT want to run that engine for more than 15-30 seconds over 1350º or the pistons may start to melt - very expensive repair. By the way install the pyro in the exhaust manifold.



Anyways, congratulations on the acquisition of your CTD.

If you have an open rear axle (nonLS) and street tread. Spining can be a problem. Lighter foot is about the only way to stop spin. The other choise is to go to a more aggressive treaded tire. I ran street tread for a few years. Tire spin was a problem even with my 3:07's with a open carrier in it. Now I have a set of med tread offroad tires. Spining is not a problem anymore.

Use it, abuse it, but whatever you do DONT fall in love with it, whenever you fall in love with anything/anyone, it costs you money and lots of it LOL.



You're gonna have alot of fun, and yeah, you will fall in love with it. May I suggest doing a complete fluid change on top of those guages? It's a wise thing to do when you get a new to you truck... as for the smokin tires-you can start off from a dead stop by not even steppin on the go pedal... I think you just need to get used to your new boy toy

What the heck are ya driving around in 4 wheel drive? We have a part time t-case, front drive shaft is not supposed to move in 2 high with hubs unlocked.



Gauges will tell you how much the pump is turned up.

He is not driving in 4wd. His truck is a 1 ton dually.

Ya got eveybodys attention with the "four wheels spinning" thing.



Definitely sounds like the fuel has been turned up. You could also have an aftermarket TC that is contributing to the spin problem. You might want to chack the aneroid setup on the pump and see what the fuel pin and spring is set at. That would help slow down your low end power until your rolling.



As far as the puff of smoke at startup that is normal and if the pump has been tweaked it is even more noticeable. As long as it starts on the first or second cylinder up and doesn't use a lot of oil between changes you should be good. The fuel systems are strictly mechanical on these trucks so messing with the wiring and safety switches will make no difference in how much fuel is sent to the motor. It doesn't get injected till you spin it.



Just remember, most of us are looking for a little tire spin and your already there.

My biggest problem is that I don't know much at all about these engines so when you say check this or that,I don't really even know where it is located on the motor,little on what it does,how it works,what to tweak here,turn there or anything. I need someone that knows more about it to help me,maybe just like talking on Yahoo or something. CB Parker helped me understand it some but he isn't on very much,but with me working full time this summer I'm not online very much either nor do I have a lot of time to learn about my truck but I really do what to learn. Would anybody be willing to help?

The systems on the gen1 trucks are pretty simple once you get an idea what is happening with them. Don't sweat not understanding right away and just ask if your confused. Read thru the stickys at the top of the page and look at Bushwakr's pictures and descripts and you will get a good feel for the parts and pieces. PM me ar email me if you need clarification for anything or just post the question.



Don't worry too much about hurting the truck when you drive it. Just use a little discretion with the right foot and you will be fine.

Something else that would probably help me a lot would probably be a factory service manuel or something of that sort. Do they still make the factory service manuel for my '93? If so where in the world could I get one,how much $$ would one be,round-a-bout price I reckon

More info on the truck



I was planning on getting it straight piped to begin with and I guess I've done it. We're pretty good friends with the guy at the local muffler shop here,and they do VERY good work for a very good price. He went and picked up a vechile my Dad bought and brought it home for us,he looked at my truck and gave me ideas of what to do. He said he believes they can build a 4" staight piped exhuast*huge grin* but if not then they can do 3" and cut my muffler off and get rid of the sad little 2" pipe running from the muffler back. He said what do you want to do,I just told him,the bigger the better,just suprise me tomorrow. So its sitting up at their shop,I guess I'll be suprised tomorrow afternoon Just had to tell somebody,I'm pumped about possibly getting it 4" straight piped!

My suggestion is to go buy some better tires. My truck has extensive modifications & even with 4. 10's... with the limited slip rear it's impossible to spin the rear duals unless I dropped the clutch in third gear or did something real stupid.
