Hey 1st Gen guys...

I got a buddy with a 92 Cummins w/5-speed and 4. 10's. His truck smokes pretty good... usually a nice cloud of thick black smoke is emitted when shifting. I think his pump has been turned up a little bit, but I am not sure on that. My guess is there is not enough air getting to the engine, and lots of unburned fuel is being expelled. Any ideas on how to fix it? Also, what do ya'll think of the 16cm² housing?

I don't know about black smoke, but my old 92 dually would bellow out some greyish white smoke while cold! At my cabin, 6800ft. , my dad would ask me if I was spraying for mosquitoes! I loved that truck and miss it dearly... had it not been for an addition to the family, I would still have it. I do love my 99 now, but it is hard to sell a "friend".

Evan: Assuming the truck is basically stock with possibly a tweaked fuel screw on the pump:
Check for a clean air filter, and that the pressurized air feed system (turbo to intake manifold) has no leaks. If he has gages, a leak would show as low boost and high EGT.
After assuring the air delivery system is tight, get on over to the TST site, and/or Fitz's Ram Tech site to adjust out the smoke on the pump. http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/technical/DIESEL/more_power/POWER_ve.htm
As far as the 16cm2 hot end housing, I think it's an excellent change out from the 21cm2. Cost effective, and nite and day difference. It's a drop in, as it has no wastegate.
The smaller housings have the wastegate, and the down pipe needs to be cut, and fit up, along with beginning to effect a restrictive area with the smaller interior chamber.

My 92 had a leak in the metal pipe just before it attaches to the intake manifold. It was a pretty good leak, I located it when I pressurized the intercooler lines, it ended up being a split in the back side of the pipe. Never had a boost guage at the time, so I didn't know what my boost was. I JB Welded it and it's been fine. I really thought I had mileage and power problem fixed, but I guessed wrong.
