is there any problems from turning up the smoke screw? i want more smoke. i don't want it to smoke like a freight train but do want more, is there a point at which there is too much smoke being produced? and could someone tell me where to get the info on turning up the pump and how to get more smoke?

What you are after is a little more fuel input that your engine in it's stock configuration will use efficiently. You'll be able to turn up the pump slightly... see http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/technical/DIESEL/more_power/POWER_ve.htm
Read about the VE44 pump and the 3 adjustments. I'd suggest you go easy in the turn up, until you install the 16cm housing, and the injectors. You can get all the smoke you want, and no extra power, by over tweaking the pump, attempting to push more and more fuel thru the stock injectors, while over-burdening the pump.
Your sig. shows a straight pipe and no muffler... If you don't have a free-flow 3. 5" system, it would certainly help.
As a tip... You want to get a pyro and boost gage before you "turn it up".
Hope this helps...
Regards.

HEY OLD SCHOOL, EXCELLENT LINK. WATCHED EARNHARDT WIN TODAY AND WENT OUT AND TURNED UP MY PUMP BEFORE I READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED LINK. THE ONLY MOVE I MADE WAS TO TURN UP THE FULL POWER ADJ. ONE COMPLETE TURN CLOCKWISE. TOMMORROW AFTER WORK I'LL PLAY AGAIN. WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND CONCERNING AN EXHAUST SYSTEM. I'M CURRENTLY RUNNING A STOCK EXHAUST WITH THE MUFFLER REMOVED AND A STRAIGHT PIPE. ALSO WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON REPLACEMENT INJECTORS. I'VE READ IN OTHER POSTS THAT SOME 93'S NEED BETTER INJECTORS TO REALLY IMPROVE PERFORMANCE. THE ONLY CHANGE THAT I NOTICED IN MY SHORT TEST DRIVE TODAY WAS A LITTLE MORE TOTAL BOOST. THANKS.

Lowell: I went with the Banks 3. 5" free flow muffler and pipe system about 5 years ago. today there are other suppliers for less cost.
The system has been modified at Ted Jannetty's facility (after the trickest set of injectors for a '92 12 valve and new "fat" pump were installed. ) by:
1. Removing the Banks "free flow" muffler
2. Cutting a section of dog leg out of the Banks "free flow" pipe
3. Welding in a nice straight section of pipe.
4. Adding a true straight thru chamber 18" muffler.
Results: Free flow system with chambered muffler that has zero restriction, allows the properly fueled Cummins to sound like a Cummins.
Thoughts on injectors:
Get on over to Ted J's link. Call or email him, and smile.
Still have the Banks muffler. . Free to a good home.
Regards.

Lowell,
How many turns did you go on the fuel pump and how much did your boost increase? I have been contemplating turning my pump up since I put my 16cm housing on and have all the gauges and I would just like to see what kind results you saw by turnin the pump up.

COASTY, I TURNED THE FULL POWER ADJ. ONE TURN CLOCKWISE. THIS IS ON THE FIREWALL SIDE OF THE PUMP AND YOU MUST REMOVE A STEEL CAP AND THEN A STEEL COLLAR ON THE SCREW TO DO THIS. TODAY I ADJ. THE LOW MANIFOLD PRESSURE FUEL DELIVERY ADJ. TURNED IT CLOCKWISE 2 TURNS AS THE PREVIOUS LINK ADVISED. THE TRUCK SEEMS TO GET MOVING WITH LESS EFFORT WITH THESE TWO ADJ. SO FAR. NONE OF THIS HAS MADE A BIG CHANGE YET BUT THE TRUCK JUST FEELS BETTER. TOMMORROW IF TIME PERMITS I'LL DO THE FULL LOAD FUEL DELIVERY RATE ADJ. HOPE ALL THIS HELPS SOMEONE. SO FAR SO GOOD.

FINALLY HAD TIME TO DO ANOTHER MOD TODAY. REMOVED THE DIAPHARAGM COVER AND TURNED THE SHAFT 90 DEGREES. I COULD SEE WHERE THE FUEL STOP PART WAS RUBBING ON THE TAPERED SHAFT BECAUSE OF A SMALL AMOUNT OF GUNK. AFTER I CLEANED EVERYTHING I COULD SEE NO WEAR ON THE PART. AMAZING, NO WEAR ON A PART AFTER 120,OOO MILES. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHAT MAKES THIS FUEL STOP RUB ON THE TAPERED SHAFT. WHAT SUPPLIES THE PRESSURE TO KEEP THE FUEL STOP AGAINST THE SHAFT. THE REASON I'M CURIOUS IS THAT I REMEMBER READING IN A POST THAT SOMEONE HAD EXPERIENCED FROZEN OR STUCK PARTS IN THEIR PUMP. SO FAR WITH ALL THESE ADJUSTMENTS TO MY PUMP I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY NIGHT AND DAY TYPE OF IMPROVEMENTS. ON ANOTHER SUBJECT, OLD SCHOOL,WHAT TYPE OF MUFFLER DID YOU INSTALL. I'VE CALLED MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THE LINKS SECTION TO TALK ABOUT EXHAUST SYSTEMS. SO FAR, BLUE CHIP DIESEL PERFORMANCE SEEMS TO HAVE THE BEST SYSTEM AVAILABLE FOR MY 4WD TRUCK. THEY OFFER A 3 1/2 INCH SYSTEM THAT USES MY HEADPIPE(ACCORDING TO BLUE CHIP THIS IS NOT A RESTRICTION)WITH A MANDREL BENT SYSTEM W/ A MUFFLER FOR $400. COMMENTS ANYONE.

Check out Exhaust Pro in Madison, Wi. (608) 221-2060. I think it's called the terminator ($40). With 3" ends I put a short piece of three inch pipe back expanded to fit the 3. 5" tailpipe. Sounds great with no restriction. I threw that piece of junk from banks away and I wouldn't recommend them for anything! They jerked me around for 6 months after I recieved the wrong order. Only after threatening to go through official channels like the Better business Bureau and federal mail order fraud did I get results.
Save yourself the headaches and the money.

Good luck
