Ok, I've been hearing these strange sounds for a while now when turning at slow speeds coming from the steering wheel or column. Little thuds, pops, etc. Is it the steering shaft?

Broken clockspring is easily identified because air bag light will come on and stay on until broken clocksrping is replaced. If no light, then I would suspect the plastic "bearing" in the base of the upper steering column. Both are common problems.

How much of a pain in the ass is it to replace that bearing in the base?

I have a feeling that is my mystery thud as well, since I don't have any idiot lights on in the dash.

The column is only replaceable as an assembly. Some have made homemade fixes but I'm not sure how. I know it involves removing the column. Mine hasn't needed it (yet). I think member Smorneau has done this.

My wife told me this morning that when she turns the wheel in her 2k... its making a grinding noise in the steering column. So does this sound like the bearings????
