Did an oil change on the Turbosaurus while on my recent towing adventure. When I tightened the oil plug, I might have put more torque on it than necessary, and either the plug or the ratchet wrench 'snapped'. It doesn't leak, but I'm wondering if I have buggered it. Saw what looked like a perfectly good cummins oil pan in the junk bin at the dealer yesterday, and it got me thinking about it.

Any comments?

Pan Plug

I can remember reading about a couple of the pan plugs having the flange deform and/or crack so you might want to keep an eye on it. Sounds like a good time to upgrade to the drain plug available from Genos.

I would not mess with it now, but buy a new drain plug and next time you change, be prepared, you may have snapped the plug off, or cracked the pan.

Thanks, fellas. I bought a spare plug right after I did the deed, and put it in the glovebox just in case the old one started to give me trouble. I also have the Geno's plug with the hose, but I'm not sure that's the one I want to use yet. Sure hope I didn't crack the pan!

When I did my first oil change on the wife's used truck, I noticed the drain plug is splitting all around where the shoulder meets the head. Of course it was 1am when I'm doing this so no chance of getting a new plug. The old one sealed up fine, but I'll have a new plug for the next change.

I imagine the split I saw was the same that is happening to yours.

TommyT,

If you got he EZ Drain plug with the spring loaded drain tube I think you;ll like it right away. I didn't check you ride, but my 4WD is high enough that I slide the bucket under screw the drain tube in and let 'er rip. No mess! I put mine in around 6k and have never looked back.
