I bought my truck used and it has everything on it, so I was wondering how do I find out if it has the "snow plow" option? and if it does is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Before I posted my question I did a search on the TDR and then searched Fritzh Ram site. Fritzh showed that the heavy duty transfer case was an option on the 2500 but came standard on the 3500. Does this mean that since I have a 3500 that mine has the snow plow option,(or the same transfer case that comes with the option) or is there something more to this option then just the heavy duty transfer case? When I looked at the spring rating on Fritzhs site it indicated that the 3500's came with the strongest springs as standard. Is there more to this snow plow option then Heavy duty transfer case and heavy duty springs? If there is what is it and what does it do? Or is there a way that I can tell by looking at my truck? Should I assume that since no one in the past talked about this option other than to say it was not available before 2000 that it is not something that is needed or important? I guess I am just curious.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me the snow plow prep option, was not an option on the 3500 This had to do the fact the truck already has the max. spring rate on it and HD T-Case.

There was a post about a month ago about the snow plow prep package not being available on the 3500 because with the wider track with the DRW, to mount a snowplow wide enough to cut a path would weigh too much for the truck. I'm sure someone smarter than me can confirm or deny this.

Thanks, Ryan and Ken. Your answers make sense. I try to do all of the research before I ask a question so I don't waste anyones time with something I can look up. But on this question I could not find a definate answer.

According to the Ram brochure the snowplow is an option on the 1500, 2500 and 3500 STs and SLTs. All it is is "Height-adjustment springs, automatic transmission overheat warning lamp and heavy-duty transfer case (4X4 models only)" I think I would look for a warning lamp on the dash since the rest of the equipment can be added for other purposes.
 
I think much of the info you'll get depends on the year of the truck.

When I bought mine, I asked about attaching a plow. The salesman told me that DC dont reccomend it. (he said something about the back tires coming off the ground!!)

I persued with more questions, and he finally came to the conclusion that "if you put 400 lbs of ballast behind the rear tires it would be OK".

Can anyone post a picture of a HD transfer case and a std duty case? My sticker under the hood dont say HD, but a mechanic told me that it was. :confused:

Well the following answers the transfer case question (got it off the Fritz site). Now does anyone know if the springs a different and if so in what way?



The NV241HD, an option on Ram 2500's and standard on Ram 3500's built after 1998, has a stronger case and wider drive chain to better withstand the shock of snow plow service, a PTO cover and drive gear, and an extra bearing to support the thrust to the main shaft created by a PTO adapter.



Except for dimensional differences and the PTO port on the NV241HD, all of the cases are almost identical in appearance. An identification tag is attached to the rear case of every transfer case. The tag provides the transfer case model number, assembly number, serial number, and low range ratio. The transfer case serial number also provides the date of build. For example, a serial number of 9-10-93 would represent September 10, 1993.
 
Just an update to my question, when crawling around under my truck (new hobby) the tag on the transfer case shows 241 DHD, I know what the HD stands for do you think the first D stands for diesel. If so do they use different transfer cases on the V-10 and the diesel?
