SO & 48E

I hope this is ok to do this. It is a question from a friend of mine not yet a member.



(Just looked at a 03 Laramie one ton dually and the valve cover label says 250 hp. @ 2900 rpm. (standard output motor). The build date is April 2003. The person still had the window option sticker and it shows the 48RE transmision.



I thought 48RE's were only available with the H. O. motor. Does anyone have this combination and how do you like it.



Does anyone know the tow rating for this vehicle. The Dodge tow guide doesn't specify 47RE or 48RE with the S. O. motor, it just says 4 spd. automatic. (10,950 lbs ))

The 48RE replaced the 47RE in all Cummins applications in MY2003 - 235hp (Cali emissions), 250hp (std output), and 305hp (HO).

If you get a good deal buy it! The 48RE is a plus I have seen them hold 575 HP on the Dyno. If you feel you need more power there are several boxes that will boost your HP right up there with the HO's and 600's.



There is even talk of a high output downloader for the SO's computers on the horrizon.



I have a SO with an EZ on level 3 and really love the power the truck has the EZ really brings the power on quickly!

The engine data plate build date on my SO/250hp was 11/15/02. I bought mine off the lot first part of Jan/03. According to window sticker on mine it shows the 47RE. My neighbor has a 03/HO CTD with a 6-spd, he bought in Oct/02, he was wanting the auto with the HO/305hp, but was not available at this time. I also ask salesperson when the HO with auto was available, of course he had no idea. Three weeks later it was available.

I have a SO 235HP with the 48RE, it could use a little more power when towing on the hills but other than that the combination has been flawless in 22K miles so far. My truck was built in 2/03

I have the 250 hp SO w/48RE in a 2500. I've only put 18,000 on it, and it is bone stock... no problems at all..... btw: it is driven mostly to work and back.....

I have the SO & 48re and really like it. I added a VA box with 3 position switch that stays off most of the time.

48re tow/haul mode

I traded my 2001 2500 quad cab for a 2005 quad cab 4x4 laramie. Can anyone tell me why dodge has made the 48re auto so that it will not lock out overdrive when in tow haul mode? I made this discovery when towing 9,000 lbs and thought that I had a problem with my transmission. Most service technicians & all salesmans I spoke with did not even know about the change in operation of the transmission.

My '03 does not ahve T/H mode the switch is OD on/off, I thought the T/H mode change in '04 was in name only and provided the same function, not allowing the trans to go into OD? Yours went into OD with the switch in T/H mode?

You've answered your own question. Tow rating is the same regardless of which transmission you have.

As far as tow ratings go, they are just a rough guideline and don't mean a lot. If you really want to know what you can (legally) tow, take the GCWR and subtract the actual weight of the truck (yes, you have to take it to a scale).

For example my truck is the same as the one your buddy has with the exception of the engine/transmission (mines a 6spd HO). GCWR is 21,000 because I have the 3. 73's (it is 23,000 with 4. 10's). My truck weighs 8338 lbs with me, a full tank of diesel and my accessories, so 21,000 minus 8338 = a tow rating of 12,662 lbs less any additional weight put in the truck such as passengers.
