cut it out and get a "test pipe" and some band clamps. if you arent happy (yeah right) you can put it back. my kitty ran away the day i brought the 12v home i know, different trucks but same cat problem.

My computer doesn't miss the kitty, but I do. I gained absolutely nothing by removing it other than more drone. yeah the exhaust does sound better, but EGT's, spool-up and whatever else are unchanged.

Cattletkr, interesting. I thought other threads on here said that was more effective than a different muffler. I was thinking several said lose the cat and leave the stock muffer, for both best sound and better performance and EGT's. Thanks for the real world report!

I think what I've seen and this is just from memory, not a search, is that a lot of guys will leave the kitty and take out the muffler. The cat mellows things out but you still get some serious noise. If I wanted a "straight pipe" setup, that's what I would do.

I have an aftermarket muffler that has been in place for over 150K. It sounds nice, but I really can't hear it much even with the windows down. So that's why I pulled the cat. First I had a straight pipe in place of the cat but the drone was terrible. Sound was phenomenal, but drone was unbearable. So I got another 4" straight thru glasspack style muffler and installed it where the cat used to be. That helped, but I still prefer the lack of noise I had before. For empty driving it's perfect. I can tool along quietly in the cab and make noise if I want to. With a trailer behind it gets a little old on those 12 hour days.

being some one who is bothered the diesels ever got a kitty at all, i have no clue what it's there for, i have read in a number of places that kitty removal performance gains are so negligable that it's not even worth the effort to remove it. the only source for my info to offer here after a quick search through some old magazines is a kitty/no kitty comparison done on an 02 F-350 (i know it's different) in November's Diesel World Magazine. I thought there was a comparison in a TDR issue also but i'm not spotting it.



even though the comparison i'm refering to is for a ford, i thought it was interesting, as our stock exhaust appears to be a better set up and using zero science i determined that if kitty removal makes little difference in a ford, it makes even less difference in our trucks.



but to answer the question..... no codes will pop on 5. 9 trucks.

I had an '03 with a Banks Monster Exhaust. No kitty on an '03. Due to the drone in the cab, I installed a MBRP muffler where the kitty would go. Greatly reduced the drone.



On my '07 I'm leaving the kitty and installing the MBRP replacement muffler. I want good tone, and don't think I need the added exhaust flow provided by removing the kitty until I get my twins. Then it's 5" straight-pipe baby!!!

just take a piece of pipe and a small sledge and presto emmisions "compliant" and free flowing ...

Kitty=no problem.

I helped my buddy gut his '05 stock exhaust and replace it with a 5" stainless Magnaflow turboback exhaust. Observations: zero performance gain w/Edge Juice,no mileage increase and a terrible drone. He wishes he'd kept the kitty and went with a free-flowing muffler. I took his advice and am happy with just that setup on my '07. Emission checks are inevitable here in Ca,and I'm ready to comply.
