Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Game Shots

NOPE!
Just busy with life!
Got both uppers assembled. Have not fired the Krieger barreled upper, as yet!
Trying to do many things and get sidetracked, easily.
Having some eye issues, also.
If I could post pictures? I would. For some reason, I can no longer post my pictures with the new camera and software.
Not tech savvy enough to sort it out!

Sticks and Patriot!
I have been able to "squeeze in" a couple of range sessions. But alongside range officer duties and class work for range safety officer. Only one good day of shooting, back in early June. Eyes are going south with high BP:mad:. Working on that and hope to make a turnaroundOo.!
I can't even see the sights on my pistol:{. Have to "point shoot"! Dang, its tough getting old:-laf!!
Am in need of one or two better scopes. Presently moving optics around on different rifles. Hoping to save enough to buy a top end scope (Nightforce) for my Elk rifle and move the older optics into better slots. The 4.5 X 14 Leupold moved from the .30/338, to the .308 and 6.5X 20 Sightron II on the Krieger HBAR upper. I believe I will be best served with a green laser on the carbine Upper receiver along with the Aimpoint RDS.
The Mounting screw holes on the .30/338 need to be repositioned and opened up to 8-40. The present location requires 16 minutes of left windage correction just to align the crosshairs. With a smaller scope, double dovetail mount/rings it is doable. However, for a significantly larger optic. There is no way to make it work, without redrilling and mounting a solid Picattinny rail like this;#ad

Weight is not an issue. The rifle already is 15#+. That is some of what I am working on, at present.
Got a pile on my plate with home life and chores, a wild and woolly 14 year old:rolleyes: and an ornery Wife:-laf!

Best Wishes!

Has this thread died?

Newt

Nope. Just pretty weather and time to farm and bust my arse so I can take off most of October, November, December, and part of January..... Had a lot of rain, myself, so I've been doing a lot of time on a tractor.... so much, in fact, I'm missing my horses!!

And I have not fired a round in over a year.
Same here......:(

 I feel for ya, guys..... :{ I take it for granted, sometimes.... I've been getting a little rimfire and some match rifle practice, lately. Not much, but it's been something. We got 10 3/8" rain last week, so I took off for a few days..... Had a cow get her head hung up in a mower, so she choked and died. Coyote bait has been good..... I need to post some pics of her with her head stuck... dangest thing I've ever seen, and I've been doing this all my life.... :--) I'll try to do that tomorrow in the hunting and shooting forum.....

Greg!! The days are too short, and here it is 23:16 hrs, and I need to be going to sleep!! But I gotta ask.... is that off center hole on an old Winchester action?

I've had 3 days off since May. I really should have stayed as an hourly employee. Then at least the 90 hours a week would have meant something in my bank account.

Head caught in a mower...suicide?

No, Brother Casey! It is a Magnum Remington 700, long action from the early 1980's.
The two holes in the receiver bridge are not on the axis of the bolt bore. I believe, moving the C/L of the holes to the left 0.0135" using the 8-40 drill and tap procedure will cleanup the right side of the holes and correct most of that 16MOA misalignment. If not? I will weld them up and re-drill and tap, again! I'll be using a D/T fixture
Been wanting to do this for several years and just decided it will get done, this year!
I hate to tear it down, cause it shoots so good. With a better optic, with more magnification, it would work better, for me!
GregH

Hmm, that's unusual, Greg.... Usually, those older Remington's are dead on... I start seeing the sloppy actions starting in the mid to late '80's, when cash became king....

Sounds like you're doing the standard fix. What fixture do you have? I've seen Forster has a nice one.... I've got a SS long action I picked up last year that's off pretty good. I've got Leupold rear screw bases on it, so I can offset the rear ring, but I'm going to chamber it in .300RUM when I get time, so I've got to drill the holes.... I'm not sure how the offset screw base will hold with 210 and 230gr bullets!!

I was thinking of using some of the new Remington two piece base/ring sets and offsetting the holes larger as you describe... I really need to set it up and measure it.... Then I looked at Brownell's and found the Nightforce solid base/rings.... they have the 20MOA built in.... but they're almost $200!!

I know where a Nightforce NXS 8-32 is, priced reasonably.....:D

Brother HH,
I'd be interested in the NXS, depending on the reticule. PM the details, please:D!

I have a Forester fixture for the D&T. It does require a barrel or a length of concentrically fit bar stock to locate the receiver.
IMHO, for your situation, this may be a better fix? It will still require setup in a milling machine.

See the "perfect picatinny rail mount" at the bottom of this page;
https://www.hollandguns.com
http://www.hollandguns.com/articles/Rail.pdf

This is still about $150, but ya don't need to buy the forester jig.

The Range day was GOOD, for the public;) shooters! Another Range Officer day, for me. Cloudy and rain, off and on. Mostly cool. But after 1600 hours, It clouded up really dark with lightning hitting the ridge right in front of the pits! I was only able to fire 3 magazines with my 9mm and 3 shots with the AR, before it was time to seek shelter! The rain, I can wait out, but that lightning is NASTY stuff!

Hmmm, that looks interesting.... Certianly has a number of applications.... It would certianly make it easier to hold the action for squaring, recentering the barrel threads, or many other simple tasks that require a square surface to hold and index off of.....

I like the Forster, just for it's simplicity, and it can be used almost anywhere, as long as the barrel is straight on the action.... Being without a mill and lathe at the moment is frustrating. I feel like I'm always mooching, using someone else's machine.... It's like using someone else's truck...

But that sine bar jig does make me wonder about cutting an AR upper to add MOA.... I'm sure it's been done, I've heard of cutting detachable scope risers, but I haven't seen it.... That would work nicely on a raised rail AR reciever.... Chamber it in .243WSSM, a 1:8 twist barrel, some 105 JLKs or 107 Sierra MKs, and you'd have a good 750, maybe 1,000yd on calm days, rifle.... :D Or an AR-10 platform.... (and my mind goes into overdrive....) 6.5 Grendal, anyone?

HH,
Helped assemble a 6.5 Grendel, earlier this month. A LILJA barrel! VERY Nice! I haven't heard anything about the performance as yet, cause my Friend had to jump on a bathroom remodel as soon as he got home! The Lilja 6.5 Grendels are headspaced using a MAXIM bolt as master. The barrel was very nicely finished, inside and out!
Very Impressed. The barrel and extension were fitted to a squared VLTOR MUR 1A upper. He used a NOVESKI 15" floating forend. I did not like the double ended barrel nut. They have to be timed to allow screw attachment of the forend to the nut. So you get it just right tight, but not aligned. You can remove the nut and turn it around to a different thread timing. So you find a compromise alignment and you are just right tight or way over tight! Did not care for that system. I loosen and tighten 3X to set the threads. I also use antisieze on the barrel extension and threads.

GregH

GHarm, I've found if you have much more than a light coat of oil or light grease on the the shoulder or threads, you're going to have to overtorque it to get it to l align. All the antisieze I use is way too thick for use there. The first one I did, I coated everything in lithium grease, and it would never align without over or undertorqueing..... So I pulled it all down, wiped most of it out, then it came together around 70lbs of torque. DIdn't like that at all!! The second one I did, I sanded the Ceracote off the end of the reciever, and it aligned around 40lbs.... so now, if I have a problem, I just touch the end of the reciever off with some high grit hone or paper(and yes, I watch the angle, keeping it perpendicular to the reciever!). A smearing of STP or some high ZDDP content oil, wipe off the excess, and it usually goes together fairly well. I do like those fore ends. And Lilja barrels are pretty good stuff. I've had several of them, and not had a "bad" one, yet. For match rifles, I've had some "9 ringers", that were only so-so..... I've got a .243 barrel threaded up on a Surgeon rifle right now that's pretty good. It's not as good as I'd like, but it makes a dang good practice and plinking rifle for 600yds. It will shoot MOA, sometimes 1/2 MOA, depending on the wind. It goes 1/4MOA at 100yds, but at 400, it starts opening up. Doesn't matter what recipe I use..... And it took close to 120rnds to quit fouling..... Anyway. For the AR systems, the Liljas are awesome. That or Krieger, all the way........ to 1000 yards, that is!! :D 80gr Bergers, anyone?

Oh, and compare the Noveske parts to Yankee Hill Machine.... I like both.

Rock River Arms ELITE Operator II Review by Nutnfancy

RRA produces some of the best high value AR-15 variants in the world. They are extraordinarily accurate, reliable, and long lasting. In this in-depth review vid, I address my thoughts on "mil-spec" and Rock River's departure from it. The QA portion of the spec is desirable but adds substantial cost and it generally overkill for the average AR user. It also limits features to those determined by US Government committees...a bad thing. The civilian market has long been where the best guns are made. Some forum elitists may balk at the materials of the Rock Rivers and features but few have extensive experience with the type and therefore their criticisms ring carry no weight with me. Granted, on paper, the 4140 steel 1/9 twist Wylde chambered barrels, commercial buffer tubes, non-HP/MPI bolt carrier, lack of barrel chroming, and other mil-spec departures may seem disappointing. But that's on paper. Shot for over SEVEN years before this review, RRA AR-15s (LAR-15s) have been stellar performers under hard TNP testing. The Elite Operator2 and Entry Tactical, wearing a few modifications of my own (discussed), achieved 1 MOA groups with STANDARD BALL ammo. With premium 77 gr Fiocchi Match Kings, the groups shrunk to 1/2 inch. Keep in mind these are tactical carbine variations of the LAR-15, not target rifles with overly thick barrels. Most high end AR-15s, piston or DI, have failed to achieve this accuracy. And this accuracy testing came only after many 1000s of rounds shot in TNP tactical drills as well. You're getting a lot of gun for your money. Features included in most models add to the value and the guns' excellent ergonomics: 2-stage RRA match trigger (excellent), star selector, RRA gas block/folding front sight, RRA CAR Operator stock, Ergo or Hogue grip, RRA Tactical Muzzle Break (effective, I would not change it out if I were you), included iron sights, winter trigger guard, and choice of forends. Current generations of the RRA Half Quad rails (discussed) are too thick and heavy (17 oz) but they're getting better. The RRA Quad rail is currently too bulkiy and old school to be attractive however; avoid it. Application of the industry leading Troy Industries Alpha rail will lighten the gun, make it easier to grab, and faster into action. Reliablity, not attributable to ammo, was 100% with both steel and brass cased rounds, all brands fired. Weights are manageable for their configurations and the excellent heavier barrel profiles Rock River uses. Many models exist and you can choose your choice of barrel, grips, stocks, and accessories but these are my two favorite (add in the ATH Carbine as well with its cryo'd SS barrel). The receivers and internals are the same. Value is excellent for these stellar performers which I feel set standards for the high value AR market. Other great options exist which achieve the same as well. Unless you are sponsored shooter and run them as rentals, chances are you will never wear out these guns in normal use. We didn't. //////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out 10 for most models; with my mods as shown: 10 out of 10. Highest rec'd model is the Rock River Arms Elite Operator2.

thanks for that wideners link, I always forget about those guys. Almost all of the 45-70 starlines are backordered until sometime next year. Ill keep my eye out for the RUMs when im trolling round for more stuff. If once-fired is okay you should check the auction sites; gunbroker, armslist and such.

Thanks, I've got notifications set from Brownell's and Wideners..... Used brass prolly won't work... the rifles I've rebarreled are using a semi-match reamer, specific to the 300gr SMKs... I ordered it from Pacific Tool..... don't think anything fireformed, especially in a production rifle, will work....

If you're still looking for 45-70 brass, I know a distributor that has some Remington in stock....

Thanks for the heads up on the bullets. Glad to see they are back in stock most everywhere (not that I get to shoot). Just waiting for my powder to show back up...and my bank account to get fat enough to take the hit.
