Ever had this happen?

A couple of times lately I've gotten in my truck to start it there was a clicking sound when I turned the switch. An additional turn of the swith started the truck. Could this be the starter solenoid or the safety switch on the clutch? Any ideas? This hasn't happened but about four times and there seems to be no pattern to it. Thanks.

Sounds like the starter to me. I ran into the same problem 4 yrs ago... . I bypassed the clutch, but that didn't solve it. Pulled the starter and cleaned the contacts... . problem solved. It has worked great ever since. I would definately try cleaning the contacts before buying a new one... . those babys are awfully steep.

There is a rebuild kit available for the solenoid. Maybe someone will chime in with the part number and source. You might take the number off the starter to NAPA and see what they can do. Dodge wants to sell you the whole starter. Mine had a contact that was getting bad. The other one was good. I found this when I inspected the starter just because I had it off to make room so I could get to the lift pump. There was a piece of copper in my shop so I made a new contact to replace the worn one. It's been working fine for several months now. The only cost for that was elbow grease.

I dug this out of my reference file, hope it helps.

Place in AZ for parts to replace starter solenoid contacts, I understand they will take phone orders.

Overhauled my solenoid this weekend with a kit from Diesel Electric Service. It's cost was $29. 50 + $8. 50 shipping and handeling. I wasn't having any problems but at 102K miles I figured it was about due. Sure enough the battery side plunger contact was more than 2/3 of the way gone:eek: It's an easy repair, just pay attention you take it apart :D
