Does anyone know where I can get a one piece oil filler cap for a 24V Cummins? Preferably one made of metal. I recently installed an Amsoil bypass filter which requires the return line be routed through the oil cap or drilling and tapping the rocker arm cover. I opted for the oil cap approach but am not satisfied with this design which requires diassembling the factory two piece cap, removing the spring, grinding off the ratchets, and then gluing the two pieces together after installing the swivel valve. The result is a somewhat flimsy arrangement. Much better if we could use a one piece oil cap. Somebody on the forum found such a cap at a parts store I believe in Florida but was unable to come up with a brand name or any way of ordering a similar item. All the aftermarket caps I have been able to locate are identical to the factory one.

Call a Cummins shop. They sell different valve covers, so I am sure they would have a cap like you want. Another place worth checking is a big rig type store. They almost always have chromed metal anything for under the hood.

Ed. . next time Nowel [HVAC] comes up I'll let ya know. . he has a through the valve cover set up on his and it works very well. . think he used AN /Aero Quip fittings so quick removal is a non issue. . mine is a dual bypass and routes differently. .

Ed,

I had the same issue when installing my bypass filter. I just could'nt bring myself to make a hole in my Cummins for a return line. I went to my local Autozone and looked throught their assortment of replacement oil caps. The diameter/thread is fairly common. I found one that could be drilled through without ruining the cap. Less than $5 and problem was solved. Good luck.

Still no luck in finding a solid cap. The half dozen or so stores in my area (somewhat the boonies) all carry the 2 piece plastic or can order one of unknown design.
