There was a discussion a few days ago about the oil capacity

of the CTD. My 92. 5 does in fact require 13 qts. of oil for the crankcase Plus filter. My owners manual says 12 qts.

It took years ( I'm slow) for me to figure this out. I finally called

Cummins Nw. and asked about it. They entered my engine

number in their computer then informed me that my engine

takes 13 qts. of oil. Apparently it depends on when the engine

was manufactured. I wasn't a TDR member when this topic

was first posted.
 
I've always put in 13, still didn't put it up to the full mark on the stick. Was about 1/3 of the way up from the add mark to the full mark. Now that I have the bypass system installed, will take about 14. 5 qts if I replace the bypass filter at the same time.



This has always been a touchy subject and I'm sure there will be some comments made!:D

I am just curious, but what is your CPL and serial number. I wonder if the W series have a larger pan??? My 9-91 (1992 model) truck takes close to 13 quarts to get to the top of the safe mark, but of course, like you, the book calls for 12. My CPL is 1351. I am using a Fleetguard 3984 stratopore filter.

I hate to show my ignorance but,I don't know what CPL

means. My truck was built 6-92. The engine number is

44756283.

The CPL identifies what "family" the engine belongs to. It is basically a spec code and can be found on the tag where you got the serial number. The number on my engine is 44657187.

Well, not exactly. There are different CPL's for a particular engine model, for example the 6BT5. 9.



Here's a definition I just dug up:



"Cummins Engine Company uses a Control Parts List (CPL) number to designate “critical” component parts

used in factory built engine models. The CPL number, (stamped on the engine’s data plate) may be used to

identify the engine components the engine was assembled with at the factory. "



As for the oil capacity, mine takes 13 (including filter) quarts to reach the full mark on the dipstick. However, I don't see how it can matter much at all if I only put 12 quarts in. It's still 3 GALLONS of oil in the pan and would take something pretty special to uncover the oil pump pickup. there, my $0. 02

I am not sure what the exact amount of oil that my truck takes, but I am positive that it is more than 12 quarts plus the filter. Next time I change the oil I will find out - if I remember.

Well thank you. My oil tech at the Dodge dealer were I use to work said all 4x4 took 13 and 2wd took 12. I looked at 2wd and they didnt have the cooler or tank etc on pass side of engine halfway in middle of engine. I was told it was a oil cooler!The 2wd didnt have this item. 13 qts with filter just puts my on full.
 
Who knows!My factory shop manual says 12. 5 with filter. Does your truck have tubing and a round canister running down middle of block on pass side?Mine does. 2wd I've looked at in past did'nt. :)It is a oil supply,return of somesort. I was told it was a cooler?
 
Yep, the tank that's on the pass side of the engine is a water cooled heat exchanger for the automatic transmission fluid.

I've had three w-250 (4x4) trucks;90,92&93. They all showed full w/12 qts. using fleetguard filters. My 93 was an auto and had the round canister transmission oil cooler on the pass. engine side.

When I bought my 92 I did notice the dipstick tube rubber was bunched up on the end and would not allow the dipstick to go all the way in; it would show about a half quart low until I fixed it.

The canister sure didn't sound right, then I read the other posts, and since mine's a manual trans, that explains it. ;)



Putting the auto trans oil cooler aside, am I right in saying all our trucks (or maybe even all Cummins B's) have a built-in engine oil cooler that uses radiator coolant to cool the oil?
 
A heat exchanger?AS well as a radiator mounted cooler?What does this exchanger do?Any way my truck just touches full mark on dipstick cold in a. m. with 13qts of oil. Even with a trans cooler and a exchanger heat is a problem with these trans?
 
I'm pretty sure that the engine oil cooler is integrated into the engine block. It's under the rectangular plate in back of the oil filter.
