Some jerk stole my mtn bike yesterday

After changing the fuel filter on my truck I tuned up my beloved '98 Rocky Mountain Element full-suspension bike and was ready to go for a ride. Left the garage door open in our supposedly safe suburban neighbourhood with people around everywhere, an hour later the bike was gone . Someone had the balls to steal it right in broad daylight.

I loved that bike, had it for 5 years of hard use and it never let me down. All parts had been upgraded and it was probably the best tuned bike in Calgary. Oh well, I guess someone is getting a good bike, or more likely an awesome set of individual components. Hopefully I'll meet someone riding it on the trails someday.

Moral: don't trust anyone and don't leave the garage door open.

i hope you catch the son of a ***** that stole your bike!keep your eye out!you knever know, might just see it on the trails. my brother n laws truck was car jacked here in n. y. and he found it himself 3 weeks later. miracles can happen . good luck. carl

Rotten Luck rspinks....

I feel for ya bud.

A couple decades back, I got all spruced up for the first day of college down at UT Austin. Since I lived off campus, I had toted my 10-speed along for the campus commutes - no sense burning gas and fighting for a parking place with such a short ride.

Parked my bike in the rack outside the building and locked it up. That afternoon, after my last class, I walked out and took the bike out of the rack and headed off down the street. Nearly killed myself by running right out into the traffic on the street... some jerk had stolen the cables for my gear shifters and brakes and I hadn't even noticed.

Got back to the apartment and locked it up, before I could fix it somebody stole the whole bike!   Miserable thievin' sons-of-... .

Call me lucky

I've been riding "name brand" or better bikes for a long time. I got a Litespeed in '97. Some time after a ride the next year I came home and went into the house and forgot to unload the bike (tied in with ropes-parked on the street). This was before dark in a medium-sized city, 2 blocks from the University. When I woke up THE NEXT DAY and realized what I'd done I RAN out front and there she was, just hanging there-like this " \ " where I'd loosened the ropes on one side.

Anyway as far as bikes go, now I ride a Turner and a Vail Cycle Works and most people haven't ever heard of them, so they don't get the looks that a Trek or Cannondale get. But I don't leave them alone anywhere but inside at home-ever.

My 6-month old Jonsered Chainsaw got stolen this Spring. Police found it, just got it back--it's being repaired. Dealer cut me a deal on the second saw. So now I have 800 bucks in two saws!

rspinks, the way you describe your neighborhood it sounds like local kids. I'll bet if you check around you'll find the gang were someone knows something about it. Offer a couple of grams of baking soda "crack" for info.

I had a buddy who had his bike stolen from our house in college. A year later as he is moving into his new house about 3 streets over, he sees a couple guys on bikes. On of them is his. He questions the guy about it and the guy says he bought it off another guy, but gave it back? I was absolutely shocked. This was a full suspension Trek Y3 with lots of upgrades. Came back in the same shape it left. Amazing!

the mountain bike i am currently riding is one that i found like 6-7 years ago. . it looked to be stolen, but i did the right thing and filled out a police report on it. . no one reported a stolen bike with the description so a month later, i got a free bike. . i need to get a new one though... i need suspension. . i ride down way too many stairs and my non suspended bike is taking a beating. .

I got my Jamis stole last year and I wassssss pisssssed, but now I have a Canondale Gemini 1000 and love it. BOMB the Down Hills baby! If your ever in Souther OR I will take you on some killer rides.

Rspinks -

sucks about the bike. hope you catch 'em. Don't know if you have homeowner's or renter's insurance, but if you do I would look into it for coverage. Good luck

Jason

ps - i ride a Stumpjumper M2 oldschool...

Thanks for the responses guys, I had to vent and I feel a bit better now 2 days later. I just can't understand how people can have the lack of moral fiber required to stake out and steal another man's property.

Sounds like we've got a few mountain bikers on the board. I thought Turner were pretty exotic bikes, as with Cycle Works. You definitely don't want to be leaving those lying around even if most people don't appreciate what they're looking at.

Sky I will definitely take you up on the offer if/when I get down there. I am a cross-country guy who likes to fly the downhills as well so I'm going to get more of a freeride bike this time. I'll be looking at a slightly used '01 Santa Cruz Bullitt tonight with a 5" single crown fork and QR20 axle. It has Hayes 8" disks and I've only ridden rim brakes so this should be interesting :p.

Thanks again for sharing your experiences and I hope you don't run into the same situation. REMEMBER TO SHUT THE GARAGE DOOR! :)

I have the QR20mm Axle and its cool. I also have the hayes hydralic 8" disks and after riding disk from V-Brakes I will never go back. The stopping power is so much better, plus you dont have to alway mess with the brakes ever, especially if your rims arnt true.

Heh I would expect living in Alberta there are not many downhills except in maby Banff area, so you probly dont have much choice but to be more Cross-Country. I use to live in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge for awhile.

Sky,

Cool that you're familiar with Alta, from Calgary there's some OK technical stuff along the Bow river by Bowness and Fish Creek. Kananaskis has some decent downhill runs just 45min away on Hwy 66 past Bragg Creek, there's more on Hwy 40 I haven't tried yet.

That said Alta's not the place for serious mtn biking. I lived in Trail BC for 4 years and played around on many serious black diamond trails around Rossland/Trail/Castlegar. Rossland is a little freeride mecca, similar to the Vancouver North Shore with lots of man-made and natural stunts on many unique and difficult trails. I'll be heading there next week, provided I line up another bike soon.

Take it easy.

PS: more bad news, insurance won't cover the bike so I'm SOL. Oh well, time for a new bike anyways.

free tours!

Yeah, if you find yourself between Atlanta and Nashville I can guide you on a ride!

If I can't ride with you, I can tell you where to go!:p

rspinks,

If your heading over to northshore area you should go check out Whistlers hill. I went there in June and its Awesome. I think it was like $20. 00 for using the lift all day long. They have tons of trails from green to double black diamond. My favorite was called A-Line its a single black diamond with lots of jumps it was very cool. If your going to be in the area I HIGHLY recommend it!

That sucks about your bike Rich-hopefully karma will place you close to the bandit right after he parks your bike and is crossing the street right in front of the Raspberry Rocket :p ... .....

Didya get your care package from down south yet? I received a bunch of goodies for my truck :) but they showed up too late for install this time which leaves me a window of 1 day in the next month to put them on :( . So bummed about it that I only opened 1 box to see what the coating looked like-then packed them all downstairs into a corner so I wouldn't get depressed every time I had to look at them... ... ... Alex is now way BOMBed up on the curve though... .....

Jason

I have to admit the thought of running this punk over with my truck is appealing. Jason the mystery box turned out to be a dud, not too surprising as the source is more talk than action sometimes. Are you going to Spokane?

I do have to check out Whistler sometime, I bet Oregon has tremendous biking (and sledding) from what I saw the one time I went to Portland. Atlanta/Nashville blows me away, I've never seen this part of the continent so that would be quite a trip. I don't have clue #1 what the countryside is like around there.

Oh I rode the Bullitt tonight and what a sweet bike, totally plush rear suspension and not much worse riding and climbing than my Element. I'm probably gonna get it tomorrow and take a gouge out of the bombing budget, oh well.

Cheers guys.

Rich

No Spokane for me unfortunately... ... I'm working through now until September 27th with 4 days off..... none of which falls on a weekend :( . Scott is working on another little get-together in the next couple months or so-soon as he gets some details hammered out I'll forward them to ya.
