Same here - got one saying my "smoking vehicle" was seen at a location on the west side of Houston. I checked the box that identified it as diesel powered, noted that it's a shame that probably close to $20 (my estimate of all the related postage, paper, and most of all - some highly trained typist/computer operator to put together the correspondence) of my hard-earned tax money had just been spent on NOTHING!!!

JGeen,

Now let me first say that I do not mind the black smoke... actually like it and the smell of diesel exhaust. Call me crazy!! My truck is straight piped and makes a lot of noise and some smoke.

With that said I think your reaction is a bit overboard. Who cares if someone writes down your license plate and sends it in. Did you even have to respond to the letter? Just ignore it. What gets me is that there are so many people on this board who get angry at people commenting on what a negative impact our smokin diesels have on the environment and them. WHY?

Why be angry at someone who thinks their intentions are good. The way I see it is that we have two choices:

1. Educate them on the truth about diesels

2. ignore it

By getting upset, smoking people out and generally being mean about it is only going to make it worse. Diesels will get a bad name if everyone acted like this and then I promise you that emmsion laws would get worse and we would all be affected.

We all know that there are a lot of mis-informed people out there. Not just about diesels, try guns? imagine if gun owners took their guns out of their holsters and started shooting them in the air because someone around them commented on how dangerous those things are? OK, maybe a silly comparison but valid non the less.

I says "have fun with your diesel, do it responsibly and avoid purposely blowing excess smoke when in a urban setting if you can". Thats it. My receipe to a happier public and a safe future for diesels.

Phil

Phil, I understand your point but the reason I am upset at this whole thing is totally uncalled for. Ever since I got this notice at the beginning of the week, I have been noticing so many big rig trucks and a few beater cars driving around with unbearable clouds of smoke coming from the stacks or the bottom of the car like it is burning oil. I am not one to go around and reporting every little thing I see wrong with the world today and it just makes me mad that again I am chosen out of the many other polluting vehicles on the road today that mine is an excessive gross polluter. I just hate people that don't realize that we are in a free country and everything can't always be pretty as peaches when things don't go their way. People just need to grow up and step up to the real world and realize that there will always be things in it that are offensive and degrading. Also, people should learn before they leap and in my case the A-hole who reported me just saw a bunch of smoke coming from my truck, so lets go ahead and report it even though I am uneducated to the fact that diesel trucks emit smoke particulates unlike that of a car.

Be fair Joe,your truck didn't spew smoke the way it was built :D You had to work to acommplish that. My truck is capable of polluting also, but I am not going to get upset when somebody doesnt like breathing my smoke. You are the one imposing on his lungs. I don't care for the idea of my Grandchildren breathing carcinagens,no matter their source. I am pretty sure you want a healthy envionment for your children to grow up in too.

I love to play, but I don't impose my will on those that dont. Enjoy your truck and relax.

I hear ya Bob, I do want a healthy enviornment for my kids but my point is, my truck doesn't put out even 1/1,000,000th of the amount of crap put into the air by everyday motorists down here in one of the worlds most polluted cities. I drive my truck maybe a total of 30 minutes each day with a light throttle(unless a heavy one is needed :D )and was sent a notice that my truck is a excessive polluter and it is on the road constantly pouring unecessary pollutants into the air. I only smoke people out who tailgate, which is a petpeave of mine, I don't just go around stomping on the throttle and smokin' out whom ever I see walking on the road or driving with their window down. The person who was behind me probably didn't even get smoked out, cuz tailgating is a lot more common and tolerable when driving around town in close quarters to every other car on the road. They probably just got a wif of the smoke when I start from a get go and no boost cuz my AFC is turned up pretty far and decided to just turn me in cuz they happen to have a pen and paper handy.

Anyway, I am relaxed about this, and have no intentions of purposely smoking someone out unless they deserve it by antagonizing me by tailgating or something. I am upset about this and that is my perogative, you might be too if you one day get a notice such as I did, but until then enjoy not being on the hit list of the air managment district.

Joe

Makes me wonder if the over-active writer sends in the addresses of all the industries that we see spewing who knows what into our air supply?

Joe, I did get one :-laf ,but I laughed it off and hoped it wasn't from anyone that had any pull in the law making arena. :D I saw your atempt at the sled and didn't see much smoke so I understand that part. Are you coming to our Dec BBQ?

Don't take this wrong Bob but you are looking at the problem all wrong. A few smokey starts never hurts anyone, it is not significant enough. The problem starts with pist off liberals with nothing better to do. But really, that is not even isnt an issue. The issue you forgot to mention is the smog will never get better but worse. The problem is we have too many people in los angeles county. Until you do something about it, the Smog police need to keep quiet. It starts with a chain, we are way up there. It is like dominos, many fall before the fault lies with our trucks. The first is allowing too much building in an area and allowing illigal immigration to run rampent in los angeles. We come much after that..... Less people, less smog... Look at Idaho for example, many smoking cars and older dirty technology. But no emissions tests and no smog problems. Why might we ask? Less people... .

Adding to the problem

, I think I am gonna start anonomously reporting all the big rigs, buses and cars that I see emitting any smoke whether it is natural for the engine to do, like our diesels, or whether they are just burning oil or something.

Joe
JGheen, I know that you are feeling singled out. But I believe that to start reporting others, would be like working for the enemy (greenies). Because the more people that get reported, the more someone believes there is a problem. "You know the old addage", "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". And it would more serve the greenies purpose, than ours. There must be a better way to get at them than shooting ourselves in the foot.

We should all get together and find a way to put down the greenies, in a productive way. I am sure that there is some intelegent sort out there that could offer a good suggestion. :)

I wish I had the answer, but I don't.

Yeah, I was not conerned with the smoke, but how terrible the truck pulled. But I am done with pulling since the truck is more an extreme trail dually than anything else. Took 'er up to Hungry Valley this morning and did some more trails and it sure does impress me sometimes for a dually. :D

I don't think I'll be making it to the BBQ, but I am gonna try, it's just quite a day of driving for me.

Barbwire, I was being sarcastic. Hence the  smiley. I would never join the "greenies" as you put it and go around policing the world like I own every grain of dirt or every breath of air thinking that being a tattle tail, as all this whole thing was come about by, is the way to go through life. I have better things to do than writing down license plates cuz I think something is wrong. I have bombing and maintenece to attend to! Oo. :D
