Goerand Brothers transmission?

Memorial Day

Yes, you read the title correctly.....

Some local idiot tried to blow up the old man's 04. 5 dually last night!

I show up at his house this morning and he is getting on me for leaving a 1 liter torn/melted Aquafina water bottle in his drive way behind his truck... . I told him I have no idea what he is talking about??? He replies "It was in your truck" To which I reply: and it still is... . I became curious of why it was melted, so I asked him where he put it.

He told me "it is in the trash" so I proceeded to the trash cans and pulled the bottle from one of them, I instantly recognized it as some sort of bomb! He then goes on to tell me he did remember hearing some LOUD explosion out side last night..... Like right out side the front door! did he check on it..... ??? NOPE!!

So I look under the back of his truck, and there is some kind of liquid on the ground (same place he removed the bottle from)??? He also found aluminum foil where the bottle was??? What kind of contraption was this??

I think I have heard of a similar setup where a chemical can react with aluminum foil, but I am not sure?

The cap is still on the bottle tight and has no hole from a fuse.

Can someone please help me to identify the liquid that was used and how dangerous this rig can be?

If you would like, please feel free to PM me as I don't think the mods want "bomb" building or materials discussed openly on the forums.

Thanks, CJ

I hope you called the local Police Dept. Sounds like you have some crazies running around the area. Has your dad Pis**d anyone off lately?

I would probably get the shotgun out and sit in a secluded area where I could see the truck. I would probably end up in Jail but I would blow the SOB's away if they came back and tried again.

Oops! I said it, good thing theres an edit button. . I know what will cause it to explode. If you can't find it, PM me if you want to know what the chemical used would be, and what you can find it in. . You had a hydrogen bomb go off behind your dads truck last night.

The material is most likely a weak HydroChloric Acid solution. This material is found in "The Works" brand toilet cleaner among other products. The reaction between this material and the aluminum foil creates Aluminum chloride and evolves hydrogen gas. When the hydrogen gas is released, the pressure increases, and this is what causes the pop bottle to burst. I have never seen one of these devices actually burn, just rupture the bottle. I suppose it's not too far fetched that it could ignire, since hydrogen ignites very easily. The reaction probably creates some heat as well, so if there's enough oxygen in the container there could conceivably be a *small* explosion/fire.

If you haven't already you might want to give that bottle to the police and file a report. At least they can see if they can find any useful evidence on it if the thrower is on file already.

Please edit if this is inappropriate.

As a side note mix some baking soda and water and pour it on the wet spot, this will neutralize the acid and prevent any potential harm to the driveway.

I guess we don’t only have to worry about terrorist from a different country but domestic as well, sucks bro.

At least no one was hurt though.

But take everyones advice let the authorities know.

Just talked with the sherif (Galveston county)... . what a load of crap  "Its the first of its kind in the area" "We will send it to our people (the evidence)" "We will get back with you"

What ever... . thats such a bunch of bull ****!!  #@$%! #@$%! #@$%!

In other words, nothing will get done.

Just kids learning to appy what they learned in science class. Don't worry about it.

Let some kids try to apply that to my truck what they learned in science class, they won't have to worry about learning anything else afterwards!!! Except maybe wearing proper attire for thier funeral perhaps!! :(

Try calling direct to the ATF. They at least have the assets to throw at something like this. Rinky dink Sheriff's offices don't usaully bother because they have to pay real money to someone else to process it for them.

I'll tell you, those kids are REAL lucky they didn't blow off their hands or get severe chemical burns. Thats a VERY, VERY dangerous bomb. I'd check with the local hospital and see if they took anyone in that night with burns, a shot in the dark, but you never know... . Also, if I'm not mistaken it's the base Sodium Hydroxide that causes that reaction, not an acid.

I'd say it's just a bunch of jealous guys over at TDS trying to make a statement. :-laf

Damn Power Jokes!! :-laf

Some of that stuff got on his Mopar SS 5'' exhaust tip..... it tarnished it a yellow color! :--)

Trying to talk him into a camera setup with a hard drive that records over captured video every couple days.

I'll not explain how I know it, but hydrochloric acid in fact works for it. Slang for it is "the works bomb" because that's the most common thing to be found over the counter with hydrochloric acid in it, which is the typical active ingredient (check the ingredients list, no NaOH to be found in there. You can find alternative sources for this information by performing a brief search. It's a cheap noise maker if you use it carefully on your own property and are careful doing it. Unfortunately it can also be used for malicious intent like this case here. That is at least the most likely item that would utilize aluminum foil as the other ingredient. I would have to think if someone had access to some NaOH they'd probably also have the ability to figure out how to use it more effectively than placing it in a pop bottle with aluminum foil.

Of course the easy way to tell if it's acidic or basic would be to use either a pH test strip or pour the baking soda/water solution on and see if it reacts. If it does, then you had an acid on the driveway. If it doesn't, then it's probably a base.

Thats what I was thinking. I had just read where an "expert" had said that is was NaOH and it sounded pretty convincing. . Either way, I've seen video of a kid blowing his hands off with that type of bomb. I would not suggest anyone even trying it because while it may be a small one and just make some noise, a 20oz plastic bottle full of it is plenty enough to do some serious damage to your body.

Muratic acid and tin foil balls make a killer bomb. And will do the yellowish tarnishing that you described. Better make sure it's all washed off from the bottom of the truck and spray some undercoating where ever it hit to prevent serious rusting issues

I'd have asked him......

If he's that pizzed about a plastic bottle left on the ground, just imagine how pizzed how I AM because "somebody" tried to blow up Dads truck. Better watch your ***!!!

20/20 hind sight.

Eric

Did you ever think it might be some of those POS Eco-terrorists here in the US?

Has there been an increase in, or reports of, enviro-nazis in your area (i. e. car dealerships being trashed or burned, new building developments being burn't).

If so, you may have a group of those scum around, and big diesel trucks make a nice target for them.

Also, don't call the ATF. Thats like calling one terrorist organization to deal with another terrorist org. Or like a Jewish store own in Nazi Germany calling the SS because his store got broken into.
