I tore into the truck a few days ago to see if I need to deal with the KDP. I did not (my engine was built in March 1999) but I have a few observations which may make this process easier for others.

First of all I could not remove the fan despite reading ever post on how to do this. I could not keep it steady enough to turn that reverse thread nut. But I found that I could remove the entire hub by unbolting it from the block. By removing the fan shoud & the fan assembly at the same time I was able to make a lot of room to get in there. Oddly the hardest part of the whole process was removing the windshield wash resevoir from the fan shroud.

I purchased a gear cover gasket from my local Cummins dealer & I found that this does not quite fit my case. I wonder if this may be an easier way to find out of you need to check for the KDP. I'm wondering if the older style case is a slightly different shape than the improved case? If so, checking could be as easy is buying a gasket & seeing if it lines up from the outside. Can anyone confirm this?

Overall this was not difficult but it took a few hours. And I banged up my hands pretty good but now I trust my rig a lot more.

Hope this is useful to someone.

thanks for the information. I'm sure this will be a big help

to a lot of us Dodge nuts. I have been wondering if there

was an easier way to tell if the case was revised.
