truck has been acting like it has water in the fuel ( i have posted about this before)so I flip my lever on the fuel filter. Liquid comes outs immediately. Now from I have understand if something comes out I have water. After I do this the truck runs better for about 10 miles and back to sagging. Well when I did this i decided to catch the liquid. It was yellow and see through NO junk was floating around or nothing did anything settle to the bottom either. It was uniform through out. So my question is, should something start coming out as soon as i open the drain (it has not always done that before)? Is this a sign of a fuel filter that needs to be changed? The one on it hasn't been on it too long. Thanx in advance.

1) When you open the drain, something will come out no matter what.

2) A clear yellow liquid sounds like #2 oil to me.

3) If you had water you would see a milky liquid or possible some yellow and some cloudy liquid.

4) Particles, etc would also be obvious.

5) I first suggest that you change the filter. If you need advise on that There are a lot of posts here or you can to to Fritz's page.

6) You could also have bad fuel. I think that happened to Steve StLaurent and there is a post here somewhere on that.

Hope this helps

I agree with Acoyle change the filter. See how it runs-if it continues to run bad sounds like bad fuel. Don't mess with the bad fuel get it out if thats the problem. Had someone dump some dirty water in the tank of one of my trucks-no water in fuel light- just quit running. Towed to dealer-lift pump and injector pump and it runs fine. Insurance Co paid for it. :p

Water in fuel 101 . Drain some fuel in to a container , look at in a jar best if you see nothing but yellow clear liquid should be fine . But for reference pour a small amount of water in to jar ,note water will go to bottom of jar and go to lowest side close jar shake hard watch air filter out and water start to descend to bottom may take a while might cause a white color for a while but will clear after time. Filter should be good for 11000 miles. Do get a fuel pressure gauge if possible . Ron in Louisville KY :p

i changed the fuel filter, it does run better but still consumes the fuel a little more than normal, don't know if it is because it is cold out or not. The fuel filter i had i don't think i had that very many miles on but it was dirty.

I got a load of (dirty??) bad fuel in my Peterbilt, and I'm still changing filters way more often than I should have to. I have a filter restriction guage on that truck so I can tell when I need to. Looks normal (glass filter) and runs fine. It seems to be getting better (changing filters less often) now after 30-40,000 miles:confused:

If this keeps up, i am going to go over to a place in Indy, the will put a stanadyne filter and with a secondary new stanadyne lift pump designed for our trucks.

Water in fuel

Diesel has a nasty habit because of its specific gravity, of not separating from water when stirred. You can also use what we call a haze test. Put some in a clear mason jar and look through it. Does it look hazy? There is a card we hold to the back of the jar for testing which gives us level of haze, but you can do the same thing with anything marked black with sharp edges, such as large print. You should be able to read through your diesel, clearly.

If it is hazy, let the sample sit for a few hours and the water will separate. You will see it in the bottom of the jar.
