From the 04 service manual I need to know the colors of the wires for the throttle position sensor harness. I'm working on installing a high idler and I think the instructions they sent me are wrong.

Many thanks!!

Many colors changed between 2003 and 2004. Here are the Manual Trans codes for the APPS for 2004:

20wt/br for apps #2 signal

20vt/br for apps #2 5 volt supply

20 br/lb for apps #1 5 volt supply

20br/vt for apps #2 return

20 br/wt for apps #1 signal

20 br/yl for apps #1 return

the first number is wire gauge, then the color/stripe color

Well, now I'm confused. Here's what I have on my truck:

Violet (no stripe)

Brown (no stripe)

Dark Blue/Light Blue Stripe

Brown/Green Stripe

White/Green Stripe

Pink/Blue Stripe

Which is NOT what's listed in my 03 manual, or the 04 manual!

Here's a couple pics of what my truck has. BTW, all these wires are 18 ga. (not 20 as in the 04 trucks). In fact, my connector is more like the A/T connector on '04 trucks, with the wrong color wires.

This is the closest I've found for the '03 from the wires you say you have. Page 8W-30-55

OR - 5v supply

PK/DB - APPS sensor return #1

WT/DG - APPS sensor signal #1

BR/DG - APPS sensor return #2

DB/DG - APPS sensor signal #2

VT/WT - 5v supply

Jeff,

I agree that's close, but it's for a 5. 7L gasser engine. Page 8W-30-72 gives the same diagram for the diesel, but the colors are the same as 8W-89-100 (perhaps you already notice that).

I'm trying to install the Diesel Services idle controller. Their instructions say:

MY 2003:

Connect to the BR/WT and the WT/BR wires.

MY 2004:

Connect to the WT/GR and the DB/LB wires.

I followed the 2004 instructions since I actually do have those colors. I have spliced the wires, but will not connect the idler until I'm sure that I won't fry the sensor when I turn it on!!

Maybe someone else out there has installed this idler on their 2003 and has some experience?? Or, maybe my truck is a "one of a kind"!

I was under the impression that the DSG idle controller did not work on the 6 speed. Has this changed? or are you just trying to make it work?

They are aware that my truck is a 6-speed, and don't seem to have any problem with that! Plus I think I was referred to the DSG by someone else on here who has one with a manual truck...

APPS connectors

I don't know if this will help but here are the connector pinout images from the 2004 shop manual. The pin signal usage is the same on 03 and 04 M/T trucks.

Good call Artie!

Rbattelle, check out page 8W-80-6 for the pinout of the APPS in the 2003 Ram manual. It says the wires for the 5. 7L & Diesel M/T are the same, so the wire colors I mentioned earlier are correct.

Let us know how it works!

Well happy day, I never saw that diagram. That diagram shows ALMOST what I have. My wires for cavity 1, 4, 5, and 6 all match the colors on 8W-80-6... only cavity 2 and 3 seem to be different (I have no orange and no VT/WT). That means if I tapped WT/DG and DB/DG then I have APPS signals 1 and 2. I'd bet that's what the DSG box needs... I'll let you know when I hear back from them. :) :)

Todd,

Problem is, I have only 1 wire that has white in it: WT/DG, so your logic won't work for me.

Jeff's revelation of the proper connector diagram on page 8W-80-6 made me go back to the connector and examine it and determine just exactly what I've got in each cavity. So here it is:

Cavity 1 - DB/DG - APPS #2 Signal

Cavity 2 - BR/VT - 5v Supply

Cavity 3 - BR - 5v Supply

Cavity 4 - BR/DG - APPS #2 Return

Cavity 5 - WT/DG - APPS #1 Signal

Cavity 6 - PK/DB - APPS #1 Return

These are what is actually installed on my truck. The only ones that don't "jive" with the manual are cavity 2 and 3. To be honest, I can't hardly tell if those are solid brown, solid violet, or brown with violet stripes; but it doesn't matter because they're just 5v supplies and I don't need them.

So, I am checking with DSG to ensure that the connections for their box are:

WHITE WIRE - APPS #1 SIGNAL

BLACK WIRE - APPS #2 SIGNAL

Which means I tap WT/DG (cavity 5) and DB/DG (cavity 1).

I think it is # 5 also ,follow all wire"s to the next connection area and see if any of them turns to brown/ wt or wt/brown ,Brown/gr ,if possible. DC is well known for changing colors at connection ports.

I got confirmation from DSG today that WHITE=APPS #1, BLACK=APPS #2. So I'm going to proceed with the install. But first I have to figure out where to mount the box and how to route the wires. I'll post a complete installation review when I'm finished. :)
