I found this in a thread @ Woodalls. Larry must have driven junk diesels.

"I myself am in favor of a gasser and drive a chevy k3500 CC 8. 1L/Ally. With a Bigfoot 2500 10. 6 camper on it I average 9 mpusg. The way I see it, if you can afford a diesel you might as well have a gasser. For a bonus, you get a lot quieter performing truck. I had diesels for 20 years and it took me that long to realize that the fuel consumption advantage just doesn't justify having to put up with the diesel performance. The torquey diesel is very impressive but when you hauling a load and say you're driving at 65 mph. As soon as you hit a hillier terrain both the diesel or gasser will shift down. At this point the gasser shines with its effortless performance as well as you can carry a conversation in your truck. As far as the fuel consumption is concerned you have to remind yourself the difference in cost will only begin to pay for itself on a diesel truck just about when the 100000 mile warranty runs out on the diesel engine. Somehow I would not like to own a diesel without a warranty and having to worry about shelling out a lot more money for a diesel engine rebuild. Not to mention the dirty engine oil that will always be there, or having to worry about running out of diesel fuel, gelling, water in fuel. I don't remember having to change the gas filter on any vehicle I owned. With a diesel you better have a spare filter and diesel fuel conditioner in your truck. As far as tuning I suppose both trucks are about even. Since the diesel is turbocharged, in case of breakdown that is a disadvantage compared to the naturally aspirated gasser.

The only way the diesel would pay for itself if it is driven minimum 200000 miles, but you will still have to keep your fingers crossed after the 100000 miles. It is true that the gasser doesn't have warranty after 36000 miles, but even after purchasing a GMPP you are still ahead of the game.

regards,

Larry.
